Kane was the bookies’ favourite to win in Birmingham on Sunday night after leading England to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia, where he won the Golden Boot for the tournament’s top goalscorer.
However, the Tottenham striker could only finish third in the public vote behind Geraint Thomas and Lewis Hamilton. As part of a new format this year, the BBC did not reveal the breakdown of the vote, making it impossible to tell how how close the voting was.
Football has provided just five winners since 1954 - Bobby Moore in 1966, Paul Gascoigne in 1990, Michael Owen in 1998, David Beckham in 2001 and Ryan Giggs in 2009.
Harry Kane believes bitter inter-club rivalries at this time of year make it difficult for footballers to land the main award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year, although England winning a major championship “would definitely help”.
With Thomas winning on Sunday night, cycling has now provided the same number, including four of the last 11. Athletics (18), Formula One (7) and Tennis (6) lead the way in terms of winners down the years.
“It’s always difficult, obviously, being a footballer,” Kane said afterwards. “It being in a team sport. Club football is so divided around the country and this time of year we’re rivals with a lot of other teams. So yeah, we had an amazing summer. But the guys who won [awards on Sunday] won stuff this year.
“For me personally it’s about getting better. Hopefully we can win the Nations League next year, and then a big competition like the Euros or the World Cup. Bringing a big trophy home. Yeah, that would definitely would be more of a help.”
The omission of English golfer Georgia Hall from the six-person shortlist despite her victory at the the Women’s British Open this year was more of a controversy than Kane’s third place. In fact, most of those commenting felt too much prominence had been afforded to England’s footballers, with the England football team received a lengthy tribute - including Three Lions performance by The Lightning Seeds, Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, plus a marching band and audience singalong - for reaching the World Cup semi-final.

Why not publish the vote I wonder? I’m a big spurs supporter but I don’t think Kane should have won it! Football is a team sport, Kane has too many haters and why not the more haters he has the happier I am! Other personalities in single sports, the likes of Hamilton, O’Sullivan, McIlrory, Murray would probably be worthy winners! Football has it’s own presentations!

Just wish they would call it sports person of the year. No One with a personality ever wins it. Not sure why they won't just change it

Well done harry kane he is a great footballer and i think football is brilliant. What he has done for spurs and england is brilliant, well done on 3rd postion. But any f1 driver who is amazing should win the award as it requires the most skill it's that simple. Nothing comes close to being an f1 driver it requires the most skill fact.

The relevance of the BBC SPOTY died in 2015 when they gave a tennis player who hadn't won a singles competition it while a boxer who became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world was placed in 4th thanks to an internal attempt to ostracize him by the BBC and media. As it turns out, everyone loves the guy now.

Lucky to get 3rd in my opinion..got the golden boot by fluke for England and should have given that award back and been generally crap for spurs this season

I don’t get the Sports Personality thing. I’ve nothing against Harry Kane and wouldn’t want to be unpleasant about anybody unnecessarily but he’s not what I would think of as a personality. I know he had a decent season scoring goals for Spurs last season but thought he was poor in the World Cup despite getting the golden boot and he already seems to have peaked as a player. Giving him the captaincy and a ton of hype seems to have ruined him as a footballer.

Ronnie O'Sullivan barely got a mention. 19 majors over a 27 year career. Nearly a 1000 century breaks and more 147's than anyone. An absolute joke. And guess what? He has a PERSONALITY!
