There are goalscorers within this England team. More than Harry Kane. You know that, I know that, Gareth Southgate knows that. And yet, England have gone three games without scoring from open play and that is a problem.
If you want to win a World Cup, you cannot only rely on one striker to do the business.
When Italy won it in 2006, they had 10 different scorers to England’s three. When Germany won it in 2014, they had eight different scorers to England’s two. This week Southgate’s side could not score against either of those opponents in open play.
England had chances, of course. Raheem Sterling missed an easy one against Italy and Mason Mount could not place the ball either side of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Mount has turned into Southgate’s go-to guy, an ever-present in the England line up.
His Premier League numbers are impressive: 11 goals and 10 assists last season for Chelsea. But his England statistics show he is not so clinical. Since his international debut, he ranks fifth in goals, with four.
I cannot help wondering if someone else would be more deserving of his spot because if you are to be an England regular, you need to provide a return and he is not doing that.
But we also need Raheem Sterling scoring. Jack Grealish. Bukayo Saka. Jarrod Bowen.
The players are there so I would not say this is a time to panic. The World Cup is still five months away. But England cannot go to Qatar relying only on Kane.

And just for the record, I am not advocating for Arteta because he's a terrible manager but so is Gareth Southgate. The excuses I hear for this guy is unbelievable. He's equally as incompetent as Mikel Arteta.

Arteta had a good team? Really? Did he have a striker remotely as good as Harry Kane? No he didn't. Does he have the same midfield quality as England does? Absolutely not. He doesn't have a midfielder anywhere near the level of Declan Rice or Conor Gallagher. Does Arteta have full backs as good as Reece James/Trent Alexander-Arnold/Kyle Walker? No he doesn't. Does Arteta have better CBs than what England has got? Benjamin White is not the best CB in England, that's for certain. And while you've got Aaron Ramsdale as your goalkeeper with Leno as backup, Southgate has the same luxury to pick Ramsdale or he can also pick goalkeepers like Pope, Dean Henderson, Pickford or any other decent English goalkeeper. He has a wealth of options at his disposal. Arteta must work with the dross served up to him by the Kroenkes. If you think about it, Southgate has a much larger pool of talent to choose from. So please spare me the nonsense about Arteta having a good team to win the FA Cup. Just remember that this mediocre Arsenal team has to compete against tough teams like Pep Guardiola's Man City or Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool even if they beat the smaller clubs. It's not easy to win the FA Cup with these high quality teams in contention every year.

José Mourinho is a far better counter attacking manager. There are teams like Denmark or Switzerland who also play reasonably defensive/conservative football but with better counter attacking play. England has way better quality in their ranks. If Mourinho was the England manager, do you think he would not have won a trophy with England? Of course he would. Please don't compare that fräúd Southgate with serial winner José Mourinho.

Have you heard about Jose comments on football heritage?I quote to him and it doesn't matter if he is conservative or not.He is still getting results.Josr use to do the same and yes those managers are better than him but club level and international level are completely different.We have seen team playing conservative brand of football wins tournament so i don't think that's a big reason to sack him.

Southgate has inherited far better quality of players than Allardyce did. Let's leave out Allardyce because he's never going to manage England again after that scandal. But there are better English managers out there like Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard who could do a way better job than Gareth Southgate with that squad of players. Southgate doesn't deserve anyone's respect. He is literally the English version of Mikel Arteta. Both these managers play extremely conservative football. James Ward-Prowse - arguably the best free kick taker on the planet 8. Four exceptional right backs in Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier 9. John Stones - One of the best CBs in the PL right now (Those are your words) 10. Ben Chilwell - one of the best LBs in the world. Surely this England squad on paper has to be the favourites for the upcoming World Cup. Maybe you'd add Brazil or France in the mix but for me, this England squad on paper ticks the most boxes and should be challenging for the World Cup. But you and I know that they won't. It's the manager holding them back.
