Harry Kane has become a primary target for Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window as they are eager to replace Edison Cavani - who is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

United had been linked to the Tottenham striker last season after the 28-year-old told Daniel Levy he wanted to leave Spurs to peruse trophies and domestic success elsewhere.

The Red Devils were eager to sign Kane ahead of their competitors but told the Tottenham hierarchy that they would have to wait until 2022 to finalise a deal following the signing Jadon Sancho.

As a result, a deal with the Red Devils fell through - with the England captain ultimately committing his future to Tottenham for another season.

However, according to The Athletic, Manchester United have re-ignited their interest in Kane. It is believed Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward has already made contact with Levy.

Woodward wanted to remind Levy that Manchester United were 'interested in Kane last summer' and warn him that they would make a move for the striker again this summer.

As a result, Jorge Mendes is said to be scanning the market for any potential centre-forwards that could replace Kane at Spurs.

However, it has been stated that Mendes is working off his own accord and has not been instructed to do so by Spurs.

Darwin Nunez is one player that has caught Mendes' eye. The 22-year-old Benfica star has taken the Primeira Liga by storm - scoring over 20 goals this season. Nunez is also known for his penetrative passing, dribbling, finishing and long range shooting.

However, Mendes is also looking at Tammy Abraham after he revived his career under Jose Mourinho at Roma after moving from Chelsea last year.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville will be pleased with Manchester United's intent when it comes to signing Kane this summer.

He previously said that United should go 'all-out' to sign Kane as acquiring his services would bring them 'five years of absolute gold' at Old Trafford.

Speaking about Manchester United's requirements in August 2021, the Sky Sports pundit and former Red Devil said: 'I would want to see a centre forward.

'Chelsea have gone and bought (Romelu) Lukaku, City are after Kane and got (Jack) Grealish. We got (Jadon) Sancho and (Raphael) Varane and they are good signings but I don't think it's enough.

'For me, I'd be going all-out to get Kane at Old Trafford. All-out. If City are going to buy Kane, why can't we get Kane? We can compete.

'Last year we said we needed a centre forward, a right winger and a centre back. if they got Sancho, varane and Kane they would have a great chance (of winning the league).

He added: 'If Kane goes to City - forget Manchester United winning the league. Forget it. If Kane goes to Manchester United you have 25 goals in your team. It's gold. Kane is gold. Fact. Five years of absolute gold. It's one player. It's Harry Kane.'

While Manchester United players - including Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford - were previously told to encourage Kane to sign for them during the 2020 European Championships.

However, their efforts did little to sway Kane - who decided decided to stay at Tottenham. He confirmed that he would 'be 100 per cent focused on helping the team achieve success' at the end of August, 2021.

Kane has not yet picked up a trophy at Spurs, but his side are currently sitting in fifth in the Premier League table - just three points off a European place.
