Harry Maguire racked up a '£63,000 bar bill' before Mykonos brawl that saw him 'punch a cop'

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire enjoyed a 'five-hour drinking session' before his alleged attack on a policeman while on a night out with pals on the Greek island of Mykonos, fresh reports claim.

The England international was arrested after being accused of punching an officer in a brawl which broke out after his sister, Daisy, was stabbed, it was claimed this weekend.

Maguire had flown to the party island after his side crashed out of the Europa League to Sevilla last Sunday and hit a series of bars and clubs with his entourage of friends and family over the days that followed.

Witnesses say they saw the defender spending thousands of pounds drinking expensive booze and eating lobster before the trouble is said to have erupted.

It comes amid claims from the vice-president of the Piraeus Bar Association that if Maguire, who appeared in court on Saturday, is convicted of the alleged assault, he could, theoretically, avoid three years in jail by paying daily fees, potentially totalling £90,000 - less than half of his weekly wage.

The 27-year-old was also charged with attempting to bribe an officer, with police sources denying reports this has been dropped.

Maguire and friends insist all they were trying to do was find out how much they could be fined, sources claim.

As Maguire prepared to fly home, it was also claimed:

Witnesses claim to have seen the player and his crowd of friends' lavish spending on huge quantities of alcohol and food.

A source told The Sun: 'Harry has been drinking like crazy since he arrived on Mykonos.

'He's been spending a fortune on booze and just doesn't seem to stop. He seemed upset about something. It was non-stop.'

It is also reported that Maguire mistook plain-clothed officers for a gang that had targeted him and his pals when he allegedly lashed out, having reportedly been told of his sister being stabbed.

A witness told The Sun: 'Harry went spare after seeing the blood on his sister and then it all kicked off big style.

'It was a nasty wound. Harry reacted just like anyone would if they saw a member of their family being attacked.'

Maguire was told on Saturday he was free to return to England despite having to face a hearing on Tuesday.

The father-of-two also learned that, if convicted, paying £90,000 - less than half his weekly wage - could see him avoid being sent to jail under a scheme to ease overcrowding in Greek prisons, the Mirror reports.

Leading lawyer Panagiotis Petropoulos, told the paper: 'The maximum theoretical sentencing could be up to seven-and-a-half years. It is understood the total would more likely be three years because a court would sentence concurrently.

'However, in the Greek penal system any sentence up to three years can be bought on a per day basis, meaning Mr Maguire can pay a set fee to avoid any jail time.'

The size of fine is at the judge's discretion, Mr Petropoulos said, meaning he face penalties equalling €100 a day – though it could also be as low as €5

It came as footage emerged showing a group of men jeering and gesticulating towards Maguire, who appears uncomfortable.

As well as criticism of his footballing ability, sick references to the 1958 Munich air disaster, which left seven Manchester United players dead, were heard, the Sun reported.

Maguire was grilled by a public prosecutor on the neighbouring island of Syros for almost two hours on Saturday morning after spending two nights in a cell there.

At the end of his appearance, he was instructed that he could go home and that his lawyers could represent him when his hearing gets underway.

Maguire, who earns £190,000 per week, emerged from court and was whisked into a waiting van. He is expected to cut his holiday short and arrive home on Sunday morning in a private jet.

He is likely to face a dressing down from his club and explain his conduct to officials, which could result in him being stripped of the captaincy.

Ioanna Rotziolou, spokesman for the local police told MailOnline: 'He is free to go back to England. He can be represented at Tuesday's [hearing] by an attorney.'

The £85million England international was arrested in Mykonos on Thursday night along with two friends, aged 28 and 29 who have not been named. They were also told that they do not have to appear at Tuesday's hearing and could return home.

According to legal sources, Maguire and his two friends have been charged with aggravated assault and verbal assault.

Reports suggested another charge of attempting to bribe a police officer had been dropped but this was denied by some police sources.

It was also revealed that two local lawyers who initially represented Maguire had been replaced by two high flying lawyers that have been hired by Manchester United and have flown in from Athens to represent him.

Eyewitnesses told MailOnline that the trouble started in the Fabrika area of Mykanos, which is packed with bars and restaurants.

They claim that a group of drunken British men started baiting Maguire and his team Manchester United and even made references to the 1958 Munich air disaster, when 23 of its players died in a plane crash when returning from a match.

Kafatos, who only wanted to give his last name, a local resident who witnessed the initial fight in Fabrika before police intervened told MailOnline: 'I'm a big football fan and recognised Harry Maguire, who was with a group of friends. They were making a lot of noise and it appeared that they had had a lot to drink.

'Another group of British men started abusing them, saying he was a rubbish footballer and played for a rubbish team. They were also calling him a fridge and I didn't really understand what they meant by that.'

Kafatos added: 'Then there was a lot of shouting, swearing and they started fighting. It was a real mess. They were throwing punches, kicking each other and rolling around on the ground before the police came.'

Briton Sam Moore said: 'This group of British lads were out for trouble and were being really abusive towards Maguire and his club.

'I could hear them singing about the Munich air disaster and saying other vile things. You could tell that they wanted to have a punch up with Maguire. I don't know what football team they supported but they didn't like Manchester United, that much was obvious.'

A Manchester United spokesman said: 'Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file.

'Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.'

Local media reports also claim that Maguire allegedly attacked the police officers after his younger sister was stabbed in the arm.

Maguire, a father-of-two, was seen yesterday evening being taken into Syros police station by plain-clothes officers after an hour-long ferry crossing to his new jail cell with the two other men.

Police said that two of their officers suffered facial injuries during the initial scrap after they were allegedly hurled to the ground, punched and kicked.

In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, Mykonos police accused the three men of another violent altercation once they had been taken into custody. On arrival to Mykonos police station, according to the statement, the men continued to resist, 'pushing and beating three police officers'.

The statement also said that 'one of the detainees tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed' but did not name Maguire.

Three days ago, Maguire was pictured drinking at a pool party at SantAnna Bar with fellow United youngsters Marcus Rashford, 22, and Brandon Williams, 19, as well as Love Island star Chris Hughes, 27, and snooker player Judd Trump, 31 and his brother Joe Maguire. It is not clear if anybody at this party was with Maguire later that evening.

Police have said that two groups of Englishmen were brawling outside Mykonos' Fabrica bar in the early hours of Friday morning and when they tried to intervene they were rounded on by three men, including the centre-half.

'When the brawl was all sorted out, one of the two groups - with the football players - started verbally abusing officers. There were several policemen there. At some point, one of the three members of the group - they were aged 27, 28, and 29 - threw a swing at one of the policemen and a fight ensued.' Petros Vassilakis a police spokesman said.

'All of the three were arrested but during the effort to do so, the other two, including the football player, got violent also. They threw down at least two policemen, hit them with their fists and kicked them.' The police spokesman continued.

'I can't tell you what they were telling us. All English swear words against the authorities and against the work of the police. All three, including the football player, are being held in custody, locked up in Mykonos cell. They will appear before a state prosecutor on the island of Syros later today to be charged with aggravated assault.'

In an official statement, Greek police said: 'Three foreigners, aged 27, 28 and 29, were arrested in Mykonos by police officers of the Mykonos police department.

'Patrolling police officers in the area of Mykonos intervened and normalised a dispute between citizens, however, three foreigners involved in the incident turned against them, insulting and hitting a police officer with fists.

'The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos Police Station, where upon their arrival they strongly resisted, pushing and beating three police officers.

'One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed. The arrested (men) were taken to the Syros Prosecutor's Office.'

Manchester United said in a statement: 'The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos on Thursday night.

'Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities.

'At this time we will be making no further comment.'
