Harry Winks refusing to give up playing in England's Nations League clash

Harry Winks is not giving up hope of being available for England’s UEFA Nations League campaign despite groin surgery last week.

Gareth Southgate will check out Leicester midfielder James Maddison on Monday as the Foxes take on Manchester City as a potential replacement for Winks.

But the Tottenham midfielder believes he can still make the squad that travels to Portugal next month.

Winks hopes to be fit in three weeks - which could mean he is available for a potential Champions League final on June 1.

Having Winks available would come as a huge boost for Southgate. Nevertheless, the England manager is exploring potential alternatives.

Elsewhere, Southgate is assessing his forward options in case Harry Kane doesn’t recover from an ankle injury in time, although there is growing optimism the England captain will be fit.

Callum Hudson-Odoi will definitely miss the UEFA Nation’s League with a ruptured achilles.

With that in mind, Southgate was at Goodison Park last night to see Everton take on Burnley - where Toffees striker Dominic Calvin-Lewin and Clarets winger Dwight McNeil, who trained with the England senior side during the last international break, were on the manager’s radar.

England No 2 Steve Holland will watch Jadon Sancho, who looks certain to be selected in the forthcoming England squad, in Germany today as Borussia Dortmund travel to Werder Bremen.
