Harvey Elliott should get a big slice of credit for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s sublime free-kick during Liverpool’s win over Fulham after confusing the home side’s defensive wall, according to boss Jurgen Klopp.
Alexander-Arnold scored a cracking strike to open the scoring for Liverpool, before Timothy Castagne equalised shortly before half-time. The Reds ended a four-game wait for an open-play goal as Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota secured the win after the break.
And Klopp says Elliott put doubt into the minds of Fulham’s defenders when he tried to poke a set-piece under the wall minutes before Alexander-Arnold’s goal.
‘Harvey has 10 or 15 per cent of the goal because we analysed Fulham and saw the wall jumps so told Harvey try to go under it,’ said Klopp, who now only has five Liverpool games remaining.
‘They obviously were not really jumping, only a little bit so Harvey could not go through with it. The crowd was laughing. But pretty sure, maybe next the time the wall didn’t jump as high as they maybe usually do.’
Alexander-Arnold cashed in on this and placed a sumptuous strike over the wall. The full back added: ‘The second (free-kick) was always going to be mine. We did our analysis yesterday, we saw they jump quite a bit. Harvey had the right idea, just not the execution.
‘The technique I use, it generates the power itself. I just try to guide it and make it hard for the goalkeeper. You get one chance in a game to execute it for the team. Practice, practice, practice and it pays off on days like today.
‘It's going to be a difficult week with two more away games (Everton and West Ham) but we're confident that if we can replicate what we did today then we should be able to get results. We have to expect five wins from five now to even stand a chance of being able to pick up silverware in a few weeks.’

Wonder why Gravenberch is so under appreciated. He had an excellent game. Was part of each of the 3 goals scored & capped it with his excellent taking of goal no.2. Did his defensive duty well. Yet not much adulation. The young man deserves to be encouraged. See a lot of future in him.

But will continue to question the wisdom of deploying Elliot in the MF as a no.8. Truth be told he's always poor in that role. Just that he has the media hype behind him. Yesterday he was again the weak link, easily bullied & wasteful. He shines far better in the attack as the RW. Wish he's given the opportunity to grow there. Should probably be the eventual successor of Mo.

The Reds did not play particularly well but did enough for a comfortable victory. The rotation worked. Most of the regular lads seem tired & exhausted. Bringing in fresh legs made lots of sense. Jota & TAA were a bit rusty but are fast getting back to full shape. Kudos to Klopp.

From till the end of the season, Liverpool front 3 should be Gakpo, Jota, Diaz Salah, Nunez Szoboszlai should be coming from bench. When they come off from bench yesterday, they were still over the place. Those 3 have lost form
