Harvey Elliott insists Darwin Nunez is only going to get 'better and better'

Liverpool are expecting Darwin Nunez to become a prolific marksman now he’s found his confidence in front of goal.

Nunez’s brilliant double against Sparta Prague on Thursday night took his run to eight goals in nine games having scored only once in his previous 13.

The Uruguayan couldn’t be more buoyant facing Manchester City on Sunday despite missing a fortnight last month with a muscular problem.

Midfielder Harvey Elliott is excited about what the 24-year-old can now go on and achieve.

‘He has always had the skill and the quality, I just sometimes think it was a confidence thing,’ said Elliott.

‘Now he is showing it. He scored a massive goal at the weekend (injury-time winner v Nottm Forest) and came up with another great performance in Prague.

‘He just needs to keep going and we will support him all the way.

‘We know what he is capable of - he is a massive player, hence the price tag and why Liverpool brought him in.

‘He is only going to get better if he keeps the confidence going.’

With Nunez justifying his £85million price tag and Mo Salah available again after his hamstring problems, Liverpool will want to take advantage and stretch their lead over City in the league table to four points.

‘We know it’s a tough game with City but I don’t think we can big it up more than any other game or think about it too much,’ added Elliott.

‘We're a massive club as well and need to be thinking about ourselves.

‘It’s two world-class managers going head-to-head but it’s at our home and the gaffer has the fans behind us from the first warm-up.

‘If we're thinking about City too much, our gameplan goes out the window. So we have to step up and make sure we're ready from the start.’
