'He thinks he's God!' - Kompany slammed after atrocious start as player-manager

Vincent Kompany has come under scrutiny following a dreadful beginning to his spell as player-manager at Anderlecht which has seen the team take just two points from their opening four games. He has received heavy criticism following the poor form of his team.

The club sit 13th in a league of just 16 teams following losses to KV Oostende and Kortrijk and draws with Royal Excel Mouscron and Mechelen and the Manchester City legend is already under-pressure from both pundits and supporters.

Ex-Anderlecht striker Marc Degryse was among the pundits in his native country to criticise Kompany, even going as far as to claim the 33-year-old may have too much power at the club.

"Kompany is only human, besides being a good footballer - but I feel he thinks he is God," Degryse said.

"In the coming international break a coach would normally have two weeks to work intensively with his squad. But Kompany will be off with Belgium to play San Marino and Scotland - before having his testimonial game in Manchester. Some people like to be busy, but they can become too preoccupied. Kompany should think about this. There are limits to everything."

Kompany was at fault for a number of goals during Anderlecht's most recent 4-2 defeat, and Degryse believes he should consider dropping himself for their next match.

"If another centre-back had made the mistakes he made he'd have been criticised - and Kompany would have dropped him for the next game," Degryse added.

"Of course Kompany shouldn't retire from playing - but he has to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. If he is honest as a manager he can't be happy with himself as a player."

Anderlecht next face a tricky-looking few games, first and away trip to eighth-placed Genk on Friday before they host third-placed Standard Liege and fourth-placed Antwerp.

Kompany will take part in a star-studded testimonial between Manchester City Legends and a Premier League All-stars XI on September 11, with the likes of Craig Bellamy, Nigel de Jong and Samir Nasri confirmed to be taking part for City with Emile Heskey and Rafael van der Vaart appearing for the opposition.
