Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson's future at the club is clouded in uncertainty with no 'real' progress made over a new deal, according to reports.
Henderson, who has been at Anfield since joining from Sunderland in 2011, has entered talks over a contract extension with his terms set to run down in 2023.
But The Athletic claim that the discussions have so far failed to reach an agreement, and the situation has been described as 'complicated' and 'sensitive'.
It has been stressed, however, that both parties remain in contact, as they have been across this summer, and the talks have not broken down.
A host of interested clubs may look to swoop in for Henderson, who currently appears stuck in limbo and will be 33 when his current deal does end.
Paris Saint-Germain are keeping a keen eye on developments, the same report adds, with Mauricio Pochettino known to rate Henderson highly.
Atletico Madrid are also tracking the midfielder, although it has been suggested that the club may not have the financial might needed to snap him up.
Giorginio Wijnaldum was able to leave Merseyside earlier this summer after he failed to pen an extension and soon joined PSG, and Henderson could exit in the same way.
This would seemingly be against Jurgen Klopp's wishes, though, with both men still close. Henderson also acts as the man to set the standard for his team-mates.
The Athletic also report that if the decision was solely down to Klopp, then Henderson and Liverpool would already have thrashed out the details.
But the final decisions are taken by FSG president Mike Gordon and sporting director Michael Edwards, as shown by Wijnaldum being able to leave.
'It's the contract that's been spoken about the least but probably tells the biggest story,' a source told The Athletic. 'This is a critical summer for Jordan.'
It is unlikely that Henderson would want to stay at Liverpool simply to act as a wise pair of shoulders in the dressing room, and he is eager to perform on the pitch.
The club hold the two-year buffer while making a decision over their skipper's future, but it is not in the interest of both parties to allow talks to tick into its final months.
Henderson is on holiday after helping England reach the Euro 2020 final, with talks expected to continue in the meantime.
There is believed to be a feeling that if Liverpool don't table terms which match Henderson's achievements, then an emotional parting of the ways is more likely.
The development comes with the club also planning on extending the contracts of several first-team players, such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson.
