How does Man United target Wan-Bissaka compare to their current right-backs?

Manchester United appear poised to start the bidding for Crystal Palace's Aaron Wan-Bissaka as they search for a new right-back.

Wan-Bissaka, 21, has enjoyed a superb breakthrough campaign at Palace, playing in 35 of their 38 Premier League matches and earning a promotion to the England under-21 squad.

He is being tipped as a future England regular and his consistent form means it is little wonder the Premier League heavyweights are sniffing around.

United are prepared to make an opening offer of £25million, according to reports this week, but this falls significantly short of the £60m valuation Palace have placed on the youngster.

The current transfer record for a full-back in the Premier League is the £52m paid by Manchester City for Benjamin Mendy and United are unlikely to go as high as the fee Palace would like.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning a major overhaul of his squad following a disappointing end to the season and a new right-back is a priority.

Antonio Valencia is leaving Old Trafford after a decade and it seems Matteo Darmian will also seek a new club after playing just seven matches this season.

That leaves only Ashley Young and Diogo Dalot as United's options at right-back.

Club captain Young occupied the position most during the course of the season, playing 41 matches, but he is now 33 and a long-term succession plan is needed.

Dalot, 20, joined from Porto for £19m just last summer and has played 25 times during his debut season at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese has looked equally comfortable playing in a right midfield or right wing position and this could well be where his future lies.

So do United really need Wan-Bissaka and does he represent an upgrade on what they already have?

His Opta stats from the 35 Premier League matches played for Palace this season reveal that Wan-Bissaka would represent an upgrade in some regards, but not in others.

His return of three assists is superior to Young and Dalot, who both recorded two. Wan-Bissaka created 14 chances in his 35 outings, whereas Young made 39 in just 30 games and Dalot 17 in just 16 outings.

Wan-Bissaka's passing accuracy was lower than Young's but was superior to Dalot's, while his crossing accuracy was slightly down on the United pair.

One asset that Wan-Bissaka would bring is a willingness to take on opponents on the dribble. He attempted 101 dribbles in those 35 games and recorded a success rate of 60.4 per cent, showing a good ability to beat his man.

Young's ageing legs meant he attempted just 42 dribbles, and while Dalot attempted fewer his success rate was almost as good as Wan-Bissaka's at 57.9 per cent.

In terms of pushing forward, the stats suggest Wan-Bissaka perhaps doesn't offer that much of an upgrade on Dalot but it should be taken into consideration that Palace are not as offensively-minded as United.

In this context, you would imagine that Wan-Bissaka would record very good crossing, dribbling, passing and assist stats when placed in a team whose instinct is always to push forward.

Defensively, Wan-Bissaka really can't be faulted. He made 129 tackles, 84 interceptions and 206 recoveries of the ball during his 35 Premier League matches.

Again it should be considered that more defensive work is required in a Palace side than a United one, but it is evident that Wan-Bissaka has all bases covered when it comes to the defensive and offensive duties expected of the modern full-back.

If United were to sign Wan-Bissaka, he would clearly offer healthy competition to Dalot with Solskjaer able to rotate the pair given United have a long and arduous Europa League campaign ahead as well as domestic competition.

Both players are in their early twenties and, with good coaching, could easily go on to become world class players.

Another exciting possibility is if Solskjaer could get them working in tandem on the right, with Dalot playing as a right-sided midfielder and Wan-Bissaka behind him.

Such a partnership could potentially serve United with devastating effect for the better part of the next decade.

But the question for now is how much United are willing to pay for a player who evidently has bags of potential but has completed just one season at the top level.
