Hungary star Barnabas Varga, who was taken to hospital after he suffered a sickening head injury during his side's Euro 2024 match against Scotland on Sunday, has been discharged from hospital.

The worrying incident occurred in the second half of the match, with the Hungary star being knocked immediately unconscious after clashing with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn as both players challenged for a long free kick.

Varga, 29, was left prone on the pitch, with his desperate team-mates frantically summoning medical professionals onto the field. They subsequently held a large brown sheet around the Ferencvarosi forward as he received medical treatment.

It was later revealed that the Hungary player had been taken to a hospital in Stuttgart and had undergone surgery to fix multiple broken bones in his face.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Hungarian Football Association wrote: 'Barnabas Varga was released from the Stuttgart hospital this morning and is currently recovering at home in Hungary.'

A picture of him leaving hospital alongside his girlfriend Laura Skrapits, was also shared online, with his domestic side, Ferencvarosi Torna Club, writing: 'Barnabas Varga is back at home!'

The image shows Varga wearing a pair of sunglasses and with some medical dressings around his cheek.

The Hungarian football association added: 'Barnabas Varga continues to recover in Hungary!'

The news comes as Hungary wait to find out whether they have done enough to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2024, following their last-gasp victory against Scotland on Sunday.

Four of the best ranked third-place teams will advance to the knockout stages, with Hungary currently one of the teams who could advance. That will depend on whether either Czechia or Georgia both win in their games against Turkey and Portugal on Wednesday evening.

After the worrying incident took place during Hungary's victory against Scotland, Skrapits had taken to social media on Monday to deliver an update on her partner.

She published a photograph of herself holding her boyfriend's hand on Instagram, which was reshared by Varga. The image was captioned: 'Thank you for your kind, supportive messages.

'Barni is over the surgery. A little rest is waiting for him but he'll be fine!’

The 27-year-old Beautician was in the stadium when her boyfriend suffered the accident.

The pair keep their private life away from fans, though the footballer has previously opened up on his relationship with Skrapits during an interview with Goal.com.

'We have known each other [for a long time], which is the most natural thing there, everyone in the village knows everyone,' he told Goal.

'My partner's parents live a few hundred metres from mine. We can walk to them.

'I like being here, I feel that once I stop playing football, I will move back to Szentpeterfa.'

After the game, Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai was pictured wearing a Varga shirt in support of his team-mate, as Hungary gathered to celebrate their last-gasp 1-0 victory against Scotland on the field.

Szoboszlai was also seen in tears after the event happened, with other members of the team looking distressed.

Kevin Csoboth would score a breakaway goal in the tenth minute of injury time, ultimately knocking Scotland out of Euro 2024 and giving Hungary a chance of reaching the last 16 as a third-place qualifier.

'The most important thing is that Barni is better, we fought for it in the last 20 minutes,' said Hungary forward Roland Sallai.

'In the end, we showed what kind of team we are, we never give up, this is our strength.'

Varga had been placed in a neck brace while on the pitch, with medics taking the precautionary measure in case the forward had suffered a spinal injury. M4 Sport reported after the incident that he was able to communicate with the medical team.
