Sir Alex Ferguson believes Bayern Munich's links to the past make them one of Europe's best-run superpowers.
Manchester United are in discussions with a number of former players - including Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher - to assume senior positions at Old Trafford as they look to restructure.
The direction in which United are headed will be shaped by the decisions Ed Woodward takes over the coming months, particularly in recruitment roles.
Ferguson, who returned to the dugout on Sunday for the 1999 Treble celebration, pointed towards Bayern's hierarchy as a strong example of how clubs can get it right.
'Bayern are a club run in the proper foundation of it,' Ferguson said. 'Former players who run it really.
'Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinze Rumenigge, they run the club in the right way and they are always winning the league in Germany. They're a great club.' Ferguson watched United run out 5-0 winners over Bayern in front of more than 60,000, with funds raised going to the club's foundation.
'I had 27 years here so I can't forget that (1999),' he added. It was good to see the lads. You look at them in different ways. They're all doing their own bits in life. They are all great professionals and good people.
The impressive thing for me is they all turned up. Some are in great condition, some are not but they all came. They all did really well. Making the effort to get here is the important thing.'

What a great day it was It's always great to see our legends. Words can't describe these talents Full of talent and hardwork Can't compare anyone with today's current squad Today's its all about money Earlier it was all about that red shirt Look at how well Beckham, Scholes, Butt and Stam played. Young should study from Beckham to how to cross. Absolutely happy I felt like we should swap our current eleven with these. Today we have just history. Hoping for the comeback of United soon GGMU
