Ince: Man City losing Premier League a disaster for broadcasters, sanctions needed quickly

Former Liverpool captain Paul Ince, in an interview with the Echo, commented on the ongoing Manchester City case following their alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Paul Ince urged the Premier League to make an example of Manchester City to deter other clubs, assuming City's appeal against the initial ruling is unsuccessful. An independent commission had previously found Manchester City guilty of 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations over nine seasons.

During the period under investigation, Manchester City won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and three League Cups.

Ince is far from a casual observer, as the two clubs he played for, Liverpool and Manchester United, both lost out on titles to Manchester City between 2009 and 2018.

Meanwhile, several of his other former clubs—West Ham United, Middlesbrough, and Wolves—were relegated from the top flight at various points during the same period.

While Ince wants to await the outcome of Manchester City's appeal before making a judgment, he insists that if the original ruling stands, Manchester City must pay the price, calling for a swift resolution on the sanctions.

Paul Ince stated: "It's incredible, isn't it? Everyone is making these assumptions, saying they might be kicked out of the Premier League, or they might have points deducted each season for the next few seasons. But no one has heard Manchester City's appeal yet. Manchester City still says they have a case to defend themselves.

"Right now, it's a guessing game. But how long will this go on? Because obviously they'll present their case to the Premier League, they might come back again, and they might appeal that outcome again.

"This could go on for many months or even many years. I just want it to be resolved quickly. Let's get the punishment out there, let's get the season going, and let's move forward. Whatever the outcome, let's deal with it as quickly as possible. If the Premier League is going to expel them, it will be at the end of the season.

"I think they'll face a points deduction, or they'll be fined, and a fine won't make any difference anyway because they're billionaires. That just won't work.

"If you think about Manchester City not being in the Premier League (I know it happened many, many years ago), from a commercial perspective, that would be a disaster.

"From a financial perspective, especially for broadcasters, it would be a disaster. You'd have over 30 games not being broadcast because Manchester City isn't in the league, so you have to consider it from that angle.

"There has to be a deterrent, because if the deterrent or punishment isn't severe enough, it won't stop other clubs from doing the same.

"But ultimately, when you're facing 115 charges, you know you're talking about one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"They've certainly done their homework, but the key is Manchester City's response. What's their defense? Do they have a defense?

"Obviously, they'll hire the best lawyers in the business, so I'm more interested to see how they manage to get out of this situation."

Manchester City's first match after the landmark ruling will be away at Anfield against Liverpool on Sunday.
