Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his 40th birthday with family and friends on Wednesday, sharing pictures of the party in a touching Instagram post.

The Portuguese icon, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, has shown no signs of retiring anytime soon at Saudi Arabian giants Al-Nassr as he continues to hunt down his remarkable 1,000-career goals target.

Ronaldo admitted upon turning 40 that his friends mock him for having 'no life', testament to hours of work he puts in every day to maintain his superb physical condition.

He initially celebrated his landmark birthday in unusual style by donning a pair of £4,000 compression boots at his home in Saudi Arabia, equipment that helps his recovery and optimises his athletic performance.

But the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus star later shared that he celebrated a birthday party with 'family and friends', uploading two photographs in a post that has already racked up seven millions likes on Instagram.

'Thank you all for the amazing birthday messages! Had a great day with family and friends, couldn’t wish for anything better,' he said.

Among those who reacted to the post were Ronaldo's former team-mate and ex-Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who humourously responded with a granddad emoji.

Ronaldo enjoyed celebrating his birthday at Al-Nassr hours earlier, as his club team-mates - including new £65million January signing Jhon Duran - gifted the Portuguese legend a stunning custom-made cake.

In a video posted on X by Al-Nassr, the forward was seen arriving at the club's training ground being welcomed by his team-mates, who began singing for him.

Ronaldo joined in before being presented with the three-tier cake, which was dressed in Al-Nassr's colours and covered in pictures of the 40-year-old throughout his glittering career.

The photos included pictures of Ronaldo as a youngster, his early stages at Sporting Lisbon, his time at Man United and, later, at Real Madrid.

Madrid paid tribute to former star Ronaldo as he celebrated his 40th birthday, with a heartfelt post onto social media.

Ronaldo spent nearly a decade at the Bernabeu, scoring 451 times in 438 games for the Spanish giants.

He won four Champions League titles with the club and received the Ballon d'Or prize four times during his time there, leaving for Juventus in 2018 before rejoining Manchester United three years later.

Ronaldo continues to feature regularly for his national team and holds the record for the most goals at international level - 135 - despite now playing in Saudi Arabia for Al Nassr.

And on his landmark birthday, Madrid sent their 'warmest wishes' to the club legend and all-time top scorer.

'Dear Cristiano, from Real Madrid, we want to send you our warmest wishes on your 40th birthday,' a post on the club's X account read.

'Every Madridista is proud of the legend that you are and what you represent for our history.

'Have a great day with your family and loved ones.'
