Fans have taken to social media to mock Gianluigi Buffon after he suffered one of the worst blunders of his career during Parma's clash with Perugia in Serie B on Monday evening.
The Italian goalkeeper conceded a goal in the seventh minute of the game after he tried to play Jayden Oosterwolde's back-pass onto Enrico Del Prato but accidently missed the ball.
Perugia forward Marco Olivieri was quick to react to Buffon's error and chased the loose ball down - slotting it into the back of the net before the 44-year-old had time to get back to his goal line.
It was a night to forget for Buffon and his Parma team-mates. The Italian side were already 1-0 down when the goalkeeper's embarrassing blunder took place.
Parma had conceded a penalty after Andrea Rispoli handled the ball in the box and Salvatore Burrai slotted it past Buffon to make it 1-0.
Having gone 1-0 down in the opening five minutes of the game, Parma didn't think it could get any worse. However, it did.
Buffon came racing off his line to collect what looked like a simple back-pass from Oosterwolde.
The veteran World Cup winner looked to forward the pass onto Del Prato with his left foot but took is eye off the ball and failed to connect with it as a result.
Olivieri beat Buffon in the foot race to the loose ball, pouncing on it to secure Perugia's second goal of the evening.
Parma did manage to claw a goal back but it wasn't enough to win as the game finished 2-1 - seeing Buffon's side pick up their third straight defeat in Serie B.
As a result, Parma are squandering in the middle of the table with their race for promotion taking a serious hit.
Meanwhile, Perugia are still in contention for reaching the play-offs after picking up some important points across the season.
Fans were quick to take to social media to share their opinion on Buffon's error. One Twitter user wrote: 'Hate seeing Buffon like this. At this point just pack it in and retire'.
Another added: 'Buffon started his professional career around the same time I started primary school, I think it's time to hang up them boots.'
Someone else said: 'Sometimes, you need someone to tell you that it's time to call it a day. Even if your name is Gigi Buffon.'
Others added: 'Buffon should retire to protect his legacy'. Another said: 'Buffon please retire. You can't even run or see the ball again.'
While one joked: 'You either retire a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a Buffon.'
