Martin Keown didn't pull his punches when it came to analysing Everton's performances against Aston Villa as the Arsenal legend slammed the Toffees' soft centre and singled out Andre Gomes for particular criticism.
Ollie Watkins capitalised on Mason Holgate's error to put the visitors ahead at Goodison Park before a quickfire response from Dominic Calvert-Lewin brought the hosts level.
It stayed 1-1 until the 80th minute, when Anwar El Ghazi curled home brilliantly to secure a first away win for Dean Smith's side since February 27 and leave Everton kicking themselves that this missed an opportunity to leapfrog Tottenham and Liverpool into sixth.
Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Keown said: 'It looked like Villa were better prepared and bullied Everton.
'Andre Gomes gave it away so many times it was criminal. What is his job if he doesn't pass well?
'Education needs to be built into the centre backs. The full backs vacated the back line and the centre backs didn't know how deep to go.
'Ancelotti has a lot to work on. It was schoolboy defending. He (Ancelotti) knows what he wants in the transfer window and he didn't get it today.'
Defeat extended eight-placed Everton's woeful home league run to one win in the last 10.
It also put a huge dent in their hopes of putting themselves within striking distance of fourth-placed Chelsea with a match in hand.
Ancelotti admitted the performance, coming a week after they beat Arsenal at the Emirates, did not warrant any more than they got from the game.
He said: 'Not good enough. Completely different from the the last game we played against Arsenal, which had more concentration, more spirit and more attitude.
'The start of the game was really bad: no concentration, a lot of passes wrong, no balance when we attacked.
'We had opportunities but also we conceded a lot and at the end of the day we deserved to lose.'
