Gary Neville has torn into Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool defender brought down Arsenal's Garbriel Jesus in a bid to deny the striker a goalscoring opportunity.

Liverpool were trailing Arsenal 2-0 at Anfield after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Jesus, with the latter then trying to add his second of the afternoon before being hacked down by Van Dijk.

Co-commentator Neville stated that the Dutch defender had lashed out through 'desperation' after he already played a huge part in Arsenal's opening goal.

'Deary me, deary, deary me, that's desperation, not frustration. No one to run back. He was beaten, well beaten,' said Neville.

'There is an element of luck in that Liverpool back four. You can defend them as they have the credit in the bank over the years, the performances, but it's getting really difficult.

'They're not doing the basics. Even there, Trent not sprinting back. Van Dijk idling across, legging someone up. It's schoolboy stuff,' he added.
