'It's not me!' – Guehi plays down Liverpool stat after fifth win over Reds this season

Marc Guehi played down the importance of his own personal record against Liverpool, after the Manchester City defender was victorious against them for the fifth time this season. 

Before leaving Crystal Palace for City in January, Guehi saw a transfer deadline-day move that would have taken him to Anfield collapse last September.

And his season has been characterised with clashes with the Reds, with City's dominant 4-0 success in Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final maintaining his proud record against them.

Guehi has now beaten Liverpool five times in 2025-26, doing so three times with Palace (once on penalties in the Community Shield, once in the Premier League and once in the EFL Cup) and twice with City (also in the Premier League in February).

Including that shoot-out win in the Community Shield, Guehi is the only player from Europe's top five leagues to beat a single team five times this season (five other City players have four wins against Newcastle United in 2025-26).

But when asked about that stat by TNT Sports after full-time, Guehi replied: "It's not me! It's just a coincidence!

"There's been a lot of ups and downs, a lot of crazy moments, but you have to enjoy it, because it's not a long career.

"It's relentless, it's exciting, it's everything I wanted, to be able to play at this level and challenge for trophies.

"I've been able to learn a lot, to be able to make mistakes, then come out and learn again, I've been given an opportunity to do that here."

Guehi was unable to play in last month's EFL Cup final, as Pep Guardiola's side earned a deserved 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley.

But having enjoyed his first few weeks working with Guardiola, the centre-back is hoping to get his hands on more silverware before the end of the season. 

"He's exactly how you see him, how he comes across on TV and in interviews," Guehi said of Guardiola. "He just loves football, he loves his players, he just wants to win."

City made FA Cup history by winning their 18th consecutive home match in the competition, surpassing Clapham Rovers' run of 17 straight home victories between December 1873 and February 1881 for the longest run ever in the competition.

The hosts endured some difficult moments in the early stages of the game, but they came through that spell of pressure for a deserved win, having edged the expected goals (xG) battle by 2.5 to 1.43, even with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah missing a second-half penalty.

"It's difficult when you play against such a good team, with so many good players, sometimes you have to ride that wave," Guehi told City's website. 

"I think, luckily, we all suffered well as a team. We dealt with those big moments. It was great that we came out the other side of it. I'm super proud of everyone."
