Jack Rodwell has left Sunderland by mutual consent after they agreed to end his £73,000-a-week contract.
Rodwell's pay was due to drop to around £42,000-a-week this season in League One with one year left on his contract.
The 27-year-old joined from Manchester City for £10.25million in 2014 but made just two Championship appearances last season.
A proposed move to Vitesse Arnhem failed to materialise but he is now a free agent with Greek side Aris among those to have made an enquiry.
Rodwell came through the youth system at Everton and was tipped as a potential bright light for England after representing the country at every youth level from Under 16 up.
He also made three appearances for the senior side, with the last of those coming in 2013.

Rodwell..... Over rated and sold for a good price by Everton. If they think the grass is greener, let them. Everton are laughing at you now and your popped ego.

Now that he is on a free he can rebuild his career. You cant blame him. It was Sunderland who offered the deal. No player is going to say that's too much money I'll play for less

There are a lot of players like Rodwell happy to sit on the bench and rake it in

Again a case of too much too soon. When Roswell was at Everton he looked as if he was going to be the next big thing in English football. With the injuries & being paid so handsomely it's as if he has lost all the drive & ambition to kick on with his career.

14 million in wages and they paid 10 million for him. Absolutely crazy and he started only one league game that they won

Ironic that he spent most of his time at Sunderland sitting on his Aris.

Everything that was wrong with Sunderland summed up in one player. Over-priced, under-performing, not even wanting to be at the club or play for the club. How in all conscience can you receive £73k a week and not want to even play when other staff at the club have lost their jobs because of relegation?

Disgusting really - but it's the club's faults for agreeing to stupid contracts in the first place .
