Jadon Sancho is ready to cause a Premier League frenzy this summer

When Jadon Sancho left the Premier League behind to further his career in Germany, there were those who could only shrug that the teenager had gone elsewhere.

At that stage, he had not made a senior league appearance for Manchester City and his talents, which would go on to be laid out on a weekly basis at Borussia Dortmund, were being viewed in a prism of youth football.

Dortmund delighted upon signing a player they felt was one of 'greatest talents in European football' at that time. That was August 2017. Fast forward to the summer of 2020 and Sancho can legitimately be described as the most in-demand young player on the continent.

He left the Premier League for £8million. It will take something exceeding £100m to get him back to now.

There was interest in him when he was allowed to leave City, that is no secret. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was an admirer then and, as a Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday, remains an admirer now as the European champions plot a move to bring him to Anfield this summer.

'We are not blind — we saw him, we liked him and then we think, "Can we get him?" No. Because English clubs don't sell to other English clubs,' Klopp said at the time.

But things are different now. Sancho is accomplished at the highest level, at high leverage moments he has delivered and helped carry a Dortmund team that at times look lost without his creativity.

Even at 19, only Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and RB Leipzig's Timo Werner have scored more goals in the Bundesliga this season than him. Both of those are typical No 9 forwards and so in a wide role, it highlights just how effective the England teenager has become.

Follow that up with his assists, a Bundesliga high of 13. Bayern's Thomas Muller, one of the most seasoned veterans of the league, is second with 12.

Second to Werner in the combined goals and assists column, a planned summer frenzy to bring Sancho back to the Premier League comes as no surprise. As Jamie Carragher said just this week, spending big on the Dortmund superstar has now undoubtedly become a 'no brainer'.

'Sancho is one of the best young players at the moment in world football, especially when you look at his actual stats for Borussia Dortmund', Carragher told Sky Sports Football Weekend Preview Podcast.

'He's an English player who I think will be desperate to come back, so I think he'll be the hottest thing everyone in the Premier League will be looking to bring in. Will he be a hit? I think so. It's a no-brainer, look at how well he has played in a top league with a top club under pressure.

'He's playing week in, week out, his numbers are fantastic and his age is just perfect.'

There is a swagger to Sancho, a confidence of a player in his prime, rather than one that finds himself miles ahead of the curve and still in his teenage years.

He has developed physically, all while retaining his pace down the right, and his ability to dribble and finish has left tongues wagging since his arrival in Dortmund.

But a record £100m-plus move to the Premier League would place immense pressure on the superstar. Just look at the scrutiny placed on Paul Pogba following his club record £89m move to Manchester United - every move, both good and bad, Sancho makes would be analysed and dissected.

And for all his success at Dortmund, the goals, the assists, the tricks and the flicks, there have been tell-tale warning signs to his next employer. Back in October he was fined by Dortmund having returned late from international duty with England.

Back in November, he was hauled off by his manager after just 36 minutes in Der Klassiker against title rivals Bayern Munich, they lost 4-0. That same month he was dropped for the Champions League loss to Barcelona after missing a team meeting in the build-up.

'Jadon is a great player, no discussions,' club chief Michel Zorc said. 'But he still has a lot to learn.'

The Athletic said at the time that the events of the previous months had left him feeling 'humiliated' and made to feel like a 'scapegoat' when things went awry. The door was well and truly kicked open for a return to England.

Bild have gone on record this season of accusing the teenager of 'ruining his reputation' after he flaunted his wealth on a recent trip to Dubai. The anger was largely fixed on his £268 golden steak.

Sancho was seen jumping off a yacht, feeding giraffes in a zoo and riding a dune buggy. So, there is all this, the flamboyance off the pitch, that comes with signing a player now as high-profile as Sancho.

But the penny seems to have dropped on the pitch at least since that embarrassing substitution in Munich and the axing in Barcelona.

He has since become the youngest player in Bundesliga history to reach 25 goals. For half a century that honour belonged to Horst Koppel, now it is the Dortmund star's name that is etched into the record books.

The appeal to Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea is obvious. Much like Zion Williamson in the NBA or Patrick Mahomes in the NFL, Sancho is a young, athletic, box-office player that can be the bedrock of a successful team for more than a decade.

The key now is who can offer what, where does he fit, are his close friends in the team, will he be the highest paid player at the club, will he be a guaranteed starter? It is going to be these kind of questions that will dominate any pursuit of the man everyone in the Premier League is fighting for this summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED

There are pros and cons to each potential landing spot, not least walking into the dysfunction that is Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is crying out for an orthodox right winger, with Daniel James, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial much more comfortable operating on the left.

His talent has been outlined above, he would become the best player in United's squad the moment he walked through the doors at Old Trafford if that is where he chooses to go.

The big issue is Champions League football or, to put it another way, the lack of Champions League football. United are currently an outside bet for a top four finish and with their progress in the Europa League unclear for now, Sancho may be sceptical about joining a side outside Europe's premier club competition.

But as for whether United have the resources to get him, that is without question. With another disappointing campaign to reflect on, expect United to be aggressive in the summer window with a generational talent like Sancho up for grabs.

'He's proven he's got consistency, he's proven he can do it week after week at a high level and this is the sort of player that United as a team and United as a group of fans that you want your club to be linked with,' ex-United striker Lee Sharpe told Sky Sports. 'I think he's a fantastic player and would fit in great at United.'

MANCHESTER CITY

There is a certain romance to a return to City, a chance at redemption and a chance to prove boss Pep Guardiola wrong.

It was the former Barcelona boss who said of Sancho in March 2019: 'I don't know [why he left]. He didn't want to take this challenge, this opportunity to discover if he was able to.'

While Sancho would not be far and away the best player in the squad at City, he would have a more realistic shot at trophies, would be working for one of the best managers ever and would be able to join up with close friend and England team-mate Raheem Sterling.

Sterling appears to have taken Sancho under his wing when they have paired up with the national team. Friendship can go a long way, especially in football, and if City are serious about bringing him back, expect Sterling to put in a word to his 'little brother'.

But the problems are that City's 2-year UEFA ban & Sancho's relationship with the club.

LIVERPOOL

It speaks volumes that Sancho is being considered to be the player who can usurp their current attacking trident of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Coasting their way to the Premier League title and looking to defend their Champions League crown, the trio have at times appeared impenetrable.

But in a similar vein to working under Guardiola at City, Dortmund chiefs will, if asked by the player, speak glowingly of Klopp and he has made no secret of his desire to work with Sancho.

Sancho is also good friends with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Henderson. And he is close to Rhian Brewster, on loan at Swansea from Liverpool, the pair having helped England win the Under 17 World Cup in 2017.

If the Reds want to go ahead and create a domestic and European dynasty, having Sancho playing for them, rather than against them, will only help.

CHELSEA

Thursday's announcement that Ajax's Hakim Ziyech will join in the summer complicates this pursuit.

Sancho grew up in London as a Chelsea fan and the boyhood supporter inside him will still surely retain an affection for the Blues and Stamford Bridge.

But Chelsea have been crying out for some fresh ideas in attack and Frank Lampard, if the club do pull off what would be the transfer of the summer, would no doubt find a way to build a team around him.

Players like Sancho do not come around too often, and when they do Real Madrid and Barcelona usually head the queue.

But with England team-mates and close friends in England, it is the Premier League that will descend into chaos to secure one of the hottest prospects in the world.
