Phil Jagielka made the most of his late introduction to the Everton starting line-up by opening the scoring against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Toffees were forced into a last-minute change after Michael Keane had to be withdrawn from the starting XI due to illness.

But Jagielka took advantage of a rare start by notching the first goal in the Premier League clash in the 10th minute.

Keane, who has started 29 Premier League matches out of 32 this season, was replaced by Jagielka in the heart of the Toffees' defence alongside Kurt Zouma.

Jagielka's last start came in Everton's 3-0 win over Cardiff in the top flight back in February and he has only featured in three matches this campaign.

The late alteration also meant a place on the bench for James McCarthy, who has not played since a horrific double-fracture of a leg in January 2018.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was looking to put a week in the headlines behind him at Goodison Park.

The England No 1 was allegedly involved in a fracas outside a bar in the early hours of Monday but after being disciplined by the club, manager Marco Silva had no intention of dropping him.

Arsenal made two changes from the team which beat Newcastle on Monday with Mohamed Elneny and Henrikh Mkhitaryan coming in for Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey, with Granit Xhaka and Laurent Koscielny out through injury.
