Fans, players and pundits have hailed Angel Di Maria's goal for Argentina as one of the best goals in World Cup final history after a scintillating move.

Di Maria added a second for Argentina after Lionel Messi had opened the scoring from the spot on 23 minutes when Di Maria was fouled by Ousmane Dembele.

A superb move saw Nahuel Molina clear the ball to the feet of Alexis Mac Allister who flicked the ball into Messi.

Messi took a touch and played the ball with the outside of his boot into Julian Alvarez who played a pinpoint through ball to Mac Alllister after the Brighton man continued his run.

First time, Mac Allister crossed the ball in for Di Maria, who finished with aplomb, also first time, past Huge Lloris in the French net.

Di Maria, overwhelmed by the occasion, burst into tears after the goal in a perfect start for his side, with France struggling to deal with Argentina's attacking play.

After the goal went in, tributes from across the footballing world poured in for the superb team goal.

Jamie Carragher said: 'What a goal! Argentina have been fantastic, France awful!'

YouTube personality Chunkz added: 'What a goal, Argentina is all over em. 2-1. Di Maria’s involvement this game has been magical.'

Another YouTube star, Chris Dixon, said: 'Di Maria with the Ozil bounce finish. Bloody Arsène Wenger has done it again.'

Dixon's tweet was in reference to the bounced finish that former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil once scored, where he aimed the ball into the ground so it would bounce over the keeper.

And Ozil himself also got in on the act when praising Di Maria. He said: 'I would say one of the best goals in a World cup final ever... Nice finish brooo...#DiMaria #ÖzilBounce.'

The Juventus midfielder, who also scored when Argentina won the Copa America in 2021, enjoyed a superb first half and he was on the receiving end of much praise.

Gary Neville said: 'Di Maria's position is killing France! Scaloni what a call.'

Former Argentina international Diego Lattore added: 'Kounde is going to dream of Di Maria.'

A further individual quipped: 'Di María crying after the goal, he is being the best of the game, what a player.'

The goal was discussed in the studio at half-time with pundits fawning over Argentina's zest in attack.

Ian Wright said: 'It's a fantastic goal and we watched it up here with a perfect angle and it was beautiful to watch.'
