Jamie Carragher has slammed the handball rules after Newcastle equalised with a controversial late penalty against a dominant Tottenham.
Referee Peter Bankes awarded Newcastle a spot-kick in the 95th minute of the game, after consulting with VAR and checking the pitchside monitor following Andy Carroll's header into the back of Eric Dier's arm.
The decision came despite Dier's back being turned and Carroll's header being from close range. It follows another highly controversial handball decision in Crystal Palace's defeat to Everton on Saturday.
"It's an absolute disgrace. An absolute joke," Sky Sports pundit Carragher said of the new handball rule that has been brought in for this season.
"Newcastle fans will be ecstatic, I can understand that but everyone else in this country will say exactly what I'm saying.
"Eric Dier jumps for the ball, has no control of where his arms are going to be, it was a header half a yard away from him, hits him on the back of his arm, he has no idea what's going on. This is a joke.
"Whether it's the Premier League, the FA, FIFA, Pierluigi Collina, whoever is involved in this, stop it, because you're ruining football for everybody. Absolute joke.
"You've got more trouble on your hands Premier League, FIFA, UEFA, whoever is involved. Change this now!"

It’s harsh to give soft penalties like this and I hope they change the rules but for now is a rule and referee has to follow the rules.

Bro, look at it, even that penalty they gave to Chelsea with a prior hand ball in the action. VAR should be correcting referees mistakes, not the opposite way.
Exactly!

I disagree with you cara... as far as u r inside 18 yard box and the ball touches your hand no matter how it is ...is a penalty simple
you are defending var bcoz you know its going to favor you more

some people never play football so dont understand that's why we get so many stupid comments. this is a stupid rule because it is not consistent, if u watched the game there were 2 incidents where the ball hit a Newcastle player on his hand in the box and nothing was given and neither did the ref look at var. the rule is if your hand moves to the ball to change the direction of the ball then it is a penalty . this is making people not watch football anymore
I literally don’t feel the urge to watch after all this madness

This rule now makes it easy for attackers to win games for their team. All the need to do in 18yard box is to shoot for the hands of opponent's player instead of the goal. You know what i mean.

This rule is an embarrassment to the game of football honestly... It makes things very difficult for defenders. When a guy is up, should he tie his hands? Shouldn't his hands move for balance? I guess those making such stupid rules never played football. How many referees played football? Any of them? If you have ever played football you won't support this absurd rule. Manchester United benefited from it last game but even as a Man Utd fan, I wasn't happy with the rule yesterday. Today still I am not happy with it.
The rule is total shame and ridiculous!

It is a real bullshit because no one can jump with both arms crossed behind the back. So, they should have awarded a penalty for Spurs too. The premier league VAR is a total shame

TOTAL CHEAT..........IF YOU WATCHED IT WELL IT WAS EVEN OFFSIDE AND COME TO THINK OF IT PENALTY...... DISGRACE REFEREE
It took me by surprise when I saw the VAR ruled it as ONSIDE.

Dier didn't even know where the ball was.. He literally had his back to the ball. Who even makes these dumb rules. Same thing with Ward in the Everton game. Really unfair.

Very stupid rule. But I am happy Tottenham are suffering from what they enjoyed last season.
I am glad it halts u all. Calling me names will not change my opinion and whether I am noisy or not is not a problem. The fact remains that Tottenham, Man u and Liverpool benefited from VAR last season. Read my first line, I called the rule stupid, but as a gunner which i have no apology for, as far as it hurts Tottenham, I enjoyed it. Will it happen to us, let's wait till that day.
