Manchester United are not playing in the Champions League this season, but even so they have caught the ire of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher during the second legs of this year's quarter-finals
Jamie Carragher brutally slapped down Manchester United during Aston Villa's heartbreaking Champions League exit at the hands of PSG. Villa hosted the French champions on Tuesday night in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Marcus Rashford joined the Midlands side on loan from United during the January transfer window and started at Villa Park. The England international was given the nod having been surprisingly picked in the lone central striker role ahead of Ollie Watkins.
Unai Emery's side entered the game trailing 3-1 on aggregate following last week's first leg at the Parc des Princes. Their attempts to pull off a comeback got off to a bad start when the Europa League theme music was accidentally played as the players came out of the tunnel.
The embarrassing mix-up sparked confusion among PSG's players, with the French side having last played in the Europa League in 2012. The Champions League theme was eventually played as the players ran out into their position.
However, Rashford is well-acquainted with European football's junior competition. During his time at United, he regularly featured in the Europa League, with United featuring in the tournament six seasons since 2015.
That led to Carragher making a dig at the attacker and in turn United's recent experiences of European football. As the Europa League theme was played, he told CBS: " Marcus Rashford seems fine. He's used to it."
The night did not start well for Rashford, as he made a key error in the build up to Achraf Hakimi's goal inside 11 minutes. It was a mistake that led to him being singled out by Alan Shearer.
"It was a poor touch from Marcus Rashford wasn't it. Just on the edge of the 18 yard box. I could see what he was trying to do. He was trying to cut in on that right foot and bend it in there," Shearer said in commentary on Amazon Prime.
"But it was a poor touch that enabled Marquinhos to get the tackle in. As soon as they won the ball back, their first thought was 'forward'. Villa were so open at the back, particularly down their right."
Rashford did recover to catch the eye as Villa suffered a gut-wrenching defeat, having fought back to make it 5-4 on aggregate. That led to the attacker being hailed by United legend Wayne Rooney.
“This is what I was saying before about Aston Villa needing Champions League to attract top players. And Marcus Rashford clearly feels he has a better chance of performing better and winning trophies with Aston Villa," Rooney told Prime.
“That’s a big worry for Manchester United, but for Aston Villa, that’s a positive sign. From Marcus Rashford’s point of view, I really want to see him like he was tonight, showing all his qualities.”

Unai Emery should get sack for substituting Rashford. Leave Rashford on the field, substitute Ngoyo with Watkins so that Watkins make use of those dangerous crosses from Rashford. Just as he took off Rashford, the pressure eased on PSG. It was really frustrating to see a coach make such a silly substitution. You substitute a player when he's not at his best in the game, not when he's your main danger man.
