Jamie Redknapp is amazed at how much England and Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has developed into becoming a leader.

The 24-year-old was named captain for Gareth Southgate's side's Nations League semi-final clash with Holland on Thursday.
Redknapp cannot believe the amount of progress that Sterling has made in recent years.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: 'If you said he would have been an England captain two years ago I would have never believed you.
'I would have thought no chance. He hasn't got the personality for it. Now he has become a leader.
'He's helping young players. This is what we are doing now in this country, we are producing players like him.
'To see the development of these young players and to see what can happen to Raheem Sterling, it’s great for English football.'
Gary Neville also believes Sterling could be the City captain in the future with Vincent Kompany departing the Etihad this summer.
Neville said: 'He's had to earn it [the captaincy] because he has been through some difficult moments.
The Man City captaincy is up for grabs too and there aren’t too many outstanding characters to takeover from Vincent Kompany.
'If you think where he has been in the past few years, he has been in some low moments. And now he [Sterling] looks like he can cope.
'That's the most important thing for young players that they come through these difficult moments.
'They are being stretched all the time. He has been isolated and alienated by the British media, he has been alienated by some of the British fans that travel to watch England and has been targeted.
'It took a huge amount of courage to speak out about racism and he took on the media.
'It could have gone wrong for him but he made a big, brave decision. Everyone warmed to him. He has made mistakes. All young people do.
Now it’s a new challenge, it's a responsibility, other players will be looking towards him.'
Jamie Carragher also hailed West Ham midfielder Declan Rice who made his second appearance for England on Thursday.
Carragher said: 'You wouldn’t be surprised to see him [Rice] as captain in two or three years’ time if he solidifies that position.
'If you’re asking me in 12 months time, I think he will be our best position in there [the holding midfield position]. I think his passing is very underrated.'
Redknapp also heaped praise on Rice: 'It’s a real test for him. Up against Wijnaldum and co. We are going to be talking about a player who can hold down that position for a long, long time to come.'

I'd say Hendo is a better captain than both Kane and Sterling. Kane got captain ship cos he scores goals but he ain't someone that motivates a team. A leader is someone who is willing to tell the players they're wrong and guide them the right way and motivate them. Not a fan of Hendo but he is the only man in that side that can pull it off. He has tasted winning big now so hes ready to motivate more than ever. Messi is not captain material btw, he is talented but hes no leader, if he was with his capabilities, he would have the footballing world at his mercy per year...
hendo is a good example as a captain for the reds

Raheem Sterling is the highest profile of player that is actively hitting out against Racism in Football. FIFA have been disappointing in their dealing with the issue, but this season Raheem has been incredible both on the pitch and off it. Racism is unacceptable and it has no place in the world, let along a game which is the work place of many. This obviously has nothing to do with Raheem's suitability as captain but personally, I think it shows that he could develop into a good leader in future, he clearly has the mental fortitude.

really...him as a captain...he was another failure today
we all know we r not perfect..but epl is the best league but they dont even have a good team. winning or losing is acceptable but not when yr coach does not know how to select a good team so its all about favouritism

He is the current captain
Sterling is not a leader... for the sake of calming racism nowadays in world football he can be a captain... But he is not a born leader... for a leader he should have some other qualities. We should be careful not to overlook born leaders in the team on the expense of excessive overpraising unnecessarily... 😂😂

He’s a leader off the pitch. For younger players mostly. Not quite ready to be an actual captain imo.
Yeah that's the issue, it's like getting a youth centre worker to be the mayor of a town, sounds good in theory but doesnt quite work....

Good player but he isnt a leader. Englands current has no leader apart from maybe Henderson.....

He’s a leader like Messi He doesn’t scream and shout but the presence of players like him and Kane are vital especially when there are a lot of youth players coming through.

Raheem Sterling is not a leader, he is just a team player, who works hard.I am not surprised with such lot of praise because he is black...just to calm racism as we complain about it these days in world football... Otherwise a good player deserves all the praises heaped on him to avoid story after story...future captain.. 👍
