Jamie Vardy celebrates last minute winner by smashing the corner flag

Jamie Vardy scored a late winner against Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon, but he didn't stop at just breaking the hearts of fans at Bramall Lane.

After breaking away from the defenders and curling the ball into the net for the winner, the Leicester striker celebrated by sliding into the corner flag, and completely shattering it with his boot.

Shards of the flagpole exploded outwards as Vardy and his Leicester team-mates celebrated going third in the Premier League table.

'VAR will be looking at that,' joked Jamie Carragher in the aftermath, poking fun at the controversial technology which has consistently grabbed headlines for over-analysing play.

After celebrating, Vardy then sheepishly tried to slot the corner flag back into place after seeing the damage he had done.

Vardy did indeed get cautioned by the referee, but the 33-year-old probably won't mind after nabbing a winner just as it seemed as though the league's bottom team would hold Leicester to a point.

Social media also erupted with reaction to the moment. 'Gets worse every time you look at it,' joked one Twitter user.

Another said: 'Jamie Vardy smashing a corner flag in half as his celebration after a breakaway last minute winner off the shoulder of the last defender, against the Blades of all people, is peak Jamie Vardy.'

Vardy grew up as a fan of local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, so the late goal would've been all the sweeter for the Englishman.

The win takes Leicester above Liverpool in the league table, although the Reds have a game in hand and host Wolves later on Sunday.
