Joe Cole proposes 'extraordinary' change to England XI for Slovenia clash as Andy Gray is left stunned

England's starting XI for Tuesday's clash with Slovenia will be the talk of the country over the coming days and Joe Cole has proposed an idea that he himself admits is 'extraordinary'.

The optimism of English supporters over the team's chances at Euro 2024 have taken a hit after two underwhelming performances in their opening two matches.

The Three Lions laboured to a 1-0 win over Serbia in their opener before being  outplayed for large parts of a 1-1 draw with Denmark in Frankfurt.

The general consensus is that Gareth Southgate has to switch things up after naming the same starting XI in both games.

And Cole has suggested that that could even involve looking at Harry Kane's place in the team.

'They need to go back to basics and thicken that midfield up,' he said on beIN Sports.

'Then he has a question, (Bukayo) Saka or (Phil) Foden'. A pause then followed before he added 'or Harry (Kane)'.

Cole then said 'extraordinary' as fellow pundit Gray nodded his head and repeated him.

Speaking further on the team, Cole said: 'Trent  (Alexander-Arnold) needs to come out of the midfield. Especially when you're not playing well you can't have a passenger.

'Trent's a player that with the ball he's got such artistry and can pick a pass.

'Just before he came off he hit an absolute worldie into Saka. If Saka brings it down and puts it in he's done his job.'

England face Slovenia in their final group game on Tuesday night knowing a win will secure top spot and a more favourable last-16 tie.
