As John Terry proudly posed with his UEFA Pro Licence certificate this week - the highest level coaching qualification available in Europe - one couldn't help but wonder what the future has in store for the former Chelsea and England captain.
If his long-time Blues team-mate Frank Lampard was under-qualified when he landed the top job at Chelsea in 2019, then Terry is surely now over-qualified for his role as Aston Villa assistant.
It is a job he has been in for three years and, allied to his wealth of experience and success as a player, makes him a worthy candidate for any managerial role in the Championship - and perhaps even the lower reaches of the Premier League.
Terry has made no secret of his long-term ambition to be a No 1 - and has spoken of his desire to manage Chelsea one day - and Aston Villa have made it clear that they will not stand in his way should the right opportunity arise.
That is perhaps because Terry is not, nor never has been, the main main in Dean Smith's backroom team. He leans more on fellow assistants Richard O'Kelly - who was with him at Brentford and Walsall - and Craig Shakespeare - the former Leicester manager and assistant.
That is not to say that Terry does not perform a valued role in Smith's coaching team, with the manager regularly tapping into his knowledge of what it is like to perform at the highest level as a player, but he was always the club's appointment rather than Smith's when they were unveiled as a duo in October 2018.
Terry is popular in the Villa dressing room and as a former centre back has been instrumental in the development of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa. They both regularly go to Terry for chats and suggestions, with Mings having become an England defender under Terry's tutelage and the younger Konsa not far off.
Villa went from having the second-worst defence in the Premier League in 2019-20 to having the joint-sixth-best last season, and Terry's role in that has not gone unnoticed.
Despite his decorated career the 40-year-old Londoner is said to be quiet and unassuming around the training ground. He is happy to listen and learn from the more experienced coaches above him and has chosen to stay out of the spotlight, declining interview offers and punditry requests.
He has watched closely as fellow members of England's Golden Generation have gone into management with varying degrees of success, with Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Sol Campbell, Wayne Rooney, Gary and Phil Neville and Paul Scholes all having taken on managerial roles before. him.
Terry has had interest in him from Championship clubs in the past and was close to taking over at Derby when the Bin Zayed Group - who tried to take over at Newcastle too - were trying to buy them last year.
He was on the shortlist for the West Brom role and has been considered by Bournemouth, but was not No 1 choice at either, so will continue to bide his time.
With more managerial moves expected in the Championship before the season starts, that opportunity could come as early as this summer, with Swansea and Fulham potentially joining Barnsley in looking for a new manager soon if theirs are poached.
As long as Villa continue on an upward trajectory his stock as a coach will continue to rise. It is surely just a matter of time before Terry becomes a manager.

I won't be surprised if you rate Tammy over Morata and co..I mean you reek of so much English sentiments no need arguing further.
At least I have valid points to back my argument here unlike you who can't actually prove that Tammy is worse than the other forwards at the club. If anything, you reek of anti-English sentiments. I bet you were slagging off Mount and Reece James until Tuchel also favoured them. But since Tuchel doesn't favour Tammy, you're dissing him as "Lampard's pet" or "Lampard's chosen one". If you call yourself a Chelsea fan, learn to respect the players, especially those who come through the academy. Don't diss the boys who work hard to break into the first team. It's not an easy task.

I won't be surprised if you rate Tammy over Morata and co..I mean you reek of so much English sentiments no need arguing further.
Tell me mister. What has Morata done in a Chelsea shirt under "better managers" like Conte and Sarri? Absolutely fúck all. What has Morata done at clubs like Atlético Madrid and Juventus? How is he doing at Spain? He's by far the most overrated striker in the current generation. It's no wonder he's playing musical chairs at different clubs. For all the hype on the player, he can't seem to settle himself. At least Tammy Abraham scored 15 PL goals in the 2019/20 season without taking a single penalty. Had he taken penalties instead of Jorginho, he'd probably have close to 20 goals. Not to mention, he actually suffered injuries midway through the season because of playing too many games. You may criticise Lampard's decision to pick him, but Tammy did more than justify his selection. His track record is still better than all these players whom fans like you considered to be better than him. Didn't some Chelsea fans say that Werner will bench him and score a truckload of goals? Well he has managed to bench him but he failed to outscore him. Tammy is brilliant and will thrive under an attack minded manager, with better forwards around. Sadly, Chelsea's forwards like Pulisic, Werner, Hudson-Odoi, Ziyech have all failed to deliver and the club's top PL goalscorer is a penalty merchant Jorginho with 7 goals(all penalties). People like you should be embarrassed to diss Tammy like that when he has barely played and still scored as much as the blokes playing week in week out.

Your statement is absolutely nonsensical. Now just because I actually rate Tammy Abraham doesn't necessarily mean that I have English sentiments. If he chose to represent Nigeria instead, you wouldn't be able to accuse me of "English bias". Anyways, when you jump to such conclusions, it just proves how short sighted you are. It's no wonder you make dumb opinions. When you blindly assume stuff about people, I can't expect sensible opinions from such an individual [byebye]

Tammy was the joint top goalscorer for Chelsea last season despite playing only half of the gametime that the other joint top scorer Timo Werner got. Show him some respect as he was also the top goalscorer at the club in 2019/20 season. Do you think Aston Villa are fóols for wanting Tammy? If you can find any player who can outscore Tammy in this Chelsea set up, then come and talk. Otherwise stay quiet and learn to respect the players who give their best. Tammy Abraham will certainly thrive at another club where he is actually valued, not at Chelsea where there is no patience with youngsters but plenty of patience on overrated expensive signings like Morata, Werner, Batshuayi, etc.

Shut your trap kid and get on with more important issues. You don't have to invest so much emotions on football comments..Are you mentally ok? Everybody who has a different opinion with you has an agenda against English guys? That's myopic I must say. Recce and Mount deserves every second they got and even more. But what raised eyebrows was Lampard placing Tammy ahead of Giroud, I mean he hardly ever gave Giroud the chance even when most matches he plays we don't lose and those Tammy played we lose, especially against top sides. Lampard understands football well, but he lacks alot of ingredients needed to be a complete manager. Firstly, the knowledge and exposure that comes with going through a course for a coaching licence. Secondly, he never passed through the tutorship of a manager (just like Terry at Aston Villa) before jumping into management. Jorginho must have seen something that made him say Lampard wasn't ready yet for a project like Chelsea's. And even before he said that, I've been saying it already from his team selections and lack of definite strategy for a whole season and half. I have nothing against your little head or English guys, I'm the number one fan of Recce and Mount but Tammy?? He won't even be a starter for a team like Wolves.

I never criticized Jose Mourihno in his first stint at Chelsea fc I wanted him more and I was against board decision for sacking him I criticized Jose Mourihno in his last stint at Chelsea fc as I felt his tactics were outdated and again I was not happy how he ill treated Dr Eva Caneiro for doing her job and also got her fired. Mourihno had tensions with Hazard and other senior players. Jose Mourihno was responsible for Kevin De Bryune, Mo Salah, Lukaku and Oscar's departure so I felt he overstayed his welcome and therefore Chelsea FC had to move forward without him 6. I never criticized Carlo Ancelloti and I was against the board's decision to sack him 7. I loved Antonio Conte and I still love him I still hope he comes back to manage Chelsea again he's got an unfinished business 8. I criticized Frank Lampard for so many obvious reasons, Frank Lampard is not a good football manager he's never gonna be one maybe for small teams yes but not big teams. Lampard is the worst manager in the history of Chelsea FC!!! I don't know why Abramovich took so long to sack him. Lampard's game and player management is extremely poor!!! I will never forgive him for the pain he cause me by making a Chelsea fc a laughing stock in the premier league. before Lampard became a manager Stamford Bridge was a slaughter house but thanks to him Chelsea FC broke records for the wrong reasons. Teams were no longer scared to come play us at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard. An average Manchester united beat us 3 times in the league something that never happened in so many years. I remember when we were leading 2-1 against sheffield united Frank Lampard decided to put in Billy Gilmour I mean WTF was that? That's when I knew we were not going anywhere under Frank Lampard. Manchester city that we beat 3 times in a space of 3 weeks or so toyed with us under Frank Lampard before he was sacked , Lampard turned good players into average players! Lampard kept saying Chelsea is not ready to compete WTF? same Chelsea FC that won Uefa Champions league title against Premier league champions??? come on don't come here and remind me about Lampard I will never change mind about him till he proves me wrong somewhere or whatsoever. Don't be silly..You can make your damn comment without having to sound like an emotional toddler. Nobody is saying Lampard hasn't the capability, the point is- he lacks some managerial ingredients that he missed by jumping from nothing to management, has he even a licence to start with? Do you know what it takes to get the license? The lessons and exposure that will help to make him a complete manager? And talking about having a thing against english players or managers, that's just a vague statement coming from a person tossed around by emotions. Mount for instance, deserves every minute he's got in Chelsea, Recce James even deserves more minutes but as for placing Tammy Abraham ahead of Giroud?? That's where some of us saw it that he is more concerned about giving birth to English players than meritocracy. Get your head stable and read comments to understand and not to fight! Everybody mustn't be of the same opinion with you and nobody has anything against England, what exactly would I ??
The reason why Chelsea is a strong team is because of individuals like Kanté, Azpilicueta, Mount, Reece James, Thiago Silva and Édouard Mendy who give no less than 100% on the pitch, and play like true professionals, and never complain. Chelsea needs more players like them. If we have more players like Jorginho, I think UEL football would be our level

Furthermore, players like Jorginho should also know their place. They're footballers who should focus on their primary job first before discussing about others' and their roles. It's no wonder that Chelsea were so mediocre midway through the season. When players don't have the right attitude and don't respect the manager, how can you expect any manager to get results? Fans like you should accuse the players for a lack of professionalism instead of having a go at the manager all the time.

Yeah but you make it sound as though he's unqualified to be a manager and was hired because the club was too sentimental. I suppose you really underestimate the thought process of the hierarchy here, or I suppose you think it's really easy to be a football manager. And for the record, Lampard is a qualified manager. He had qualified for a UEFA Pro License back in 2019. So you cannot question his qualifications because he has already done his coaching badges. So spare me the education because he has already done it and you're just clutching at straws. And furthermore, my rude reply was warranted for people like you who actually think they know more about football management than professionals at their work. I don't mind criticism, because nobody should escape criticism. However, you make it sound as though Lampard didn't qualify, and didn't earn the job. That's completely false. I don't like when people spew nonsense over here just because they're given the platform to chat freely. Have a free opinion but don't exploit this freedom to spread nonsense. Try to make valid points with substance. If you don't know whether Lampard has a license or not, do yourself a favour and do some constructive research instead of chatting rubbish here.

I bet a fake Chelsea fan like you didn't watch the EFL Cup Round of 16 match which we played against Derby County and won 3-2. That was a hard fought match and we won courtesy of 2 lucky own goals by Tomori and Reogh. In fact, you can go back and look at the stats for yourself. Lampard's Derby County had more shots on target than Sarri's Chelsea. And he also had the privilege of eliminating Mourinho's Man Utd in the 3rd round of the EFL Cup in the same season. All this proves that he has more managerial capability than you casual, ignorant football fans think. Yeah I know 😅 As I said yesterday, these are the people who feed off negativity. And just to add one more thing to this conversation, Chelsea would have never hired Lampard in the first place if he didn't have managerial ability or if they feel he wasn't qualified enough. If these "fans" really think that was the case, they're basically trying to suggest that the board is extremely incompetent, unprofessional and overly sentimental with their decision to hire Lampard.

Wise, cool and calculated guy he's. Unlike Mr England that doesn't even have same license, was never an assistant manager anywhere to learn a few things, never managed an junior club team, just jumped to managing Derby and from there to Chelsea.. He feels like the smartest guy in England but he forgot that slow and steady learns alot enough to be a winner. Jorginho wasn't wrong when he said Lampard wasn't ripe for such project. And come to think of it, why is that Man U ex players ain't making any waives in football management? Seems having just 1 manager all through serves as a disadvantage.
