John Terry makes bid for Chelsea return… in goal after Kepa's arrival!

Chelsea icon John Terry has poked fun at himself by suggesting he was disappointed not to be considered as Thibaut Courtois' replacement at Stamford Bridge.

Terry's former club made a surprise move to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga on Wednesday evening, paying Athletic Bilbao a world-record £72million fee for a goalkeeper.

Arrizabalaga will replace Courtois as Chelsea's No 1 with the Belgian moving to Real Madrid but Terry joked on Thursday that he was expecting the call instead after his brief spell keeping goal during an away trip to Reading in 2006.

'When you think you're getting the call... but they sign someone for £72m,' Terry wrote on Instagram accompanied by an image of him in goal against Reading photoshopped with a phone emoji.

Terry went in goal in stoppage time of Chelsea's 1-0 win over Reading in October 2006 following freak injuries to first and second-choice stoppers Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini.

Cech was taken off on a stretcher with a fractured skull in the fifth minute of the match when he was caught by Reading forward Stephen Hunt.

His replacement Cudicini played in goal for the remaining 85 minutes of normal time at the Madejski Stadium until he was knocked out in a clash with Reading defender Ibrahima Sonko.

With no fit goalkeepers remaining in the squad and no substitutions left, Terry assumed the role and pulled on third-choice keeper Hilario's jersey as nine-man Chelsea held on for a 1-0 victory.

Terry left Chelsea to join Championship side Aston Villa at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, bring an end to a 19-year career at Stamford Bridge.

The former England captain made 32 Championship appearances for Villa as they were beaten in the play-off final by Fulham but is currently without a club.
