Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool were at fault for their frustrating 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened West Brom in the Premier League.
Sadio Mane's early opener for the hosts was cancelled out by a second half Semi Ajayi header as Sam Allardyce's side defended well against the league champions.
Klopp revealed that he was not prepared for the Baggies to sit so deeply, claiming they lined up with six midfielders ahead of four defenders, but did admit that it was their 'own fault' for not taking three points.
'It was our own fault. I don't think anyone can expect West Brom would play like they did in the first-half. 6-4 or whatever it was,' Klopp told Sky Sports.
'We did okay in the first half but second half we didn't do the same. They had counter-attacks. We gave set-pieces away and it's our own fault.'
The German explained that the busy Christmas schedule has made it tough to maintain their standards that saw them blitz the Premier League last season.
'It's an incredible challenge to stay active when you constantly face ten men. West Brom deserve the point because we didn't finish the game.
'It's difficult to game, it's a busy period, but in the end everyone feels we should have done better.
'In the first half you prepare a team and today it was clear they would be defensive. We had in the first half really good situations but in the second half we didn't have it anymore.
'It's not a game we will talk about in 20 years but it's a game we had to play.'
Liverpool have endured an injury crisis for much of the current campaign and defender Joel Matip was the latest addition to their list of wounded players as he left the field during the second half with an apparent groin problem.
The centre-back had just dealt with a breakaway from Callum Robinson when he alerted the home bench that he was injured, with Rhys Williams coming on in his place.
The Reds are already missing their first-choice pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are out until April and June respectively.
Klopp insisted he 'didn't know' on Matip's exact condition after the match nor the severity of the injury.
