Christian Kabasele appeared to be in high spirits on Thursday as he joked about being visited in hospital by the goal post he collided with during Watford's defeat by Chelsea.

Kabasele was taken to hospital and given oxygen to numb the pain after being forced off in the Boxing Day fixture having suffered a nasty collision with the post.

The defender updated fans about his condition on Twitter on Thursday by admitting although he was still in pain, he is hopeful that he has not suffered any serious injury.

Kabasele said: 'Good morning everybody. Hopefully nothing broken but still have big pain. Great gesture of the goal post who visited me at hospital. Thank you for your messages I hope to be back as soon as possible  #watfordfc.'

Chelsea started brightly and after goalkeeper Ben Foster was rounded, Kabasele slid towards goal attempting to preserve the clean sheet - only to suffer a horror injury.

He hit the post under his right arm as fans and Watford coaching staff were left concerned while medical staff attended to him before he was helped off the pitch to be replaced by Adrian Mariappa.

Despite returning to his feet momentarily, television pictures towards the end of the first half showed the former Genk man being wheeled into an ambulance on a stretcher with the aid of oxygen.

With games coming thick and fast over the Christmas period, it is a blow for Watford to lose one of their key men at the back.

Chelsea winger Willian looked set to squeeze the ball home from a tight angle inside 15 minutes having done the hard work to round Foster in the Hornets goal.

But Kabasele showed commitment to the cause as he flew back towards his own goal to stop their London rivals taking the lead.

Javi Gracia and the club's supporters commended the efforts of Kabasele but were soon anxious as to the extent of the injury which saw him treated for a number of minutes before he returned to his feet.

Wincing, the call was made for Mariappa to get stripped and come on and it remains unclear how many matches Kabasele will now be forced to sit out as a trip to the hospital likely to clear up the extent of the injury to the right arm.
