Karius chills out on Greece beach after being told to stay away from UCL final

This time last year Loris Karius was in the headlines for the wrong reasons, with the goalkeeper having made two costly errors in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Liverpool are back in the final of Europe's elite club competition this season, but Karius, who is on loan at Besiktas, won't be present for the clash against Tottenham in Madrid.

Like all of Liverpool's loanees, Karius was offered tickets for the final. However, he has elected to stay away as he feared his presence could be a distraction.

Instead, the 25-year-old is taking the time to relax and is currently on holiday with his girlfriend Sophia Thomalla.

Karius and Thomalla enjoyed themselves on a beach in Greece, with the goalkeeper appearing to have put his struggles to one side.

During last season's Champions League final, which Real Madrid won 3-1, Karius' mistake allowed Karim Benzema to score before another error saw him drop Gareth Bale's shot over the line.

This season Karius made 35 appearances for Besiktas across all competitions, during which he conceded 49 goals and kept just six clean sheets.

Karius is due to spend another season on loan at the Turkish club, but his performances haven't been well received by Besiktas fans.

In fact, after Karius suggested that he is willing to stay at Besiktas next season, Thomalla's car was vandalised, with the word 'loser' having been spray painted on it.

Since joining Liverpool from Mainz in 2016 Karius has made 49 appearances for the club, with his contract running until the summer of 2021.
