For once Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was almost lost for words but despite his initial shock, he managed to answer a question about how long he would like to remain in charge at Anfield.
Previewing the Reds first game of their USA tour against his previous club Borussia Dortmund, the 52-year-old spoke to reporters at Notre Dame University in Indiana.
Klopp followed his captain Jordan Henderson who had described his gaffer as: “A special person and a special manager both on and off the pitch” and declared that he would like to see the German “stay with us for a long time.”
When taking his seat for his own section of the press conference, Klopp was taken aback by the opening gambit.
First bellowing with laughter and then shaking his head, he tapped the base of the microphone while pausing for thought before responding: “Wow!
“I don't think a lot of people get asked that question three years before their contract is expiring.
“We will see. I don't know if it sounded negative, positive, why should we think about... at least three years, that's the answer, at least three years, umm, good.”
First taking charge at Liverpool in October 2015, Klopp initially penned a three-year deal at Anfield but after steering the club to the Europa League and League Cup finals in his first season, he signed a new six-year contract in June 2016, taking him through until the summer of 2022.
