Kompany jokes his children will be torn after Burnley were drawn with Man City

Vincent Kompany admits his three children might have split loyalties with Burnley handed a dream FA Cup quarter-final tie at former club Manchester City.

Kompany booked a return to The Etihad when his runaway Championship leaders saw off 10-man Fleetwood with a 90th-minute winner from Connor Roberts.

Attention then immediately switched to the draw which paired Kompany with a club where he holds legendary status and has a statue in his honour outside the stadium.

‘My ties with City are extremely strong and will remain so,' he said. 'I’ve gone a few times to watch them with the kids. It is not a bad thing to do in Manchester on a Sunday! The kids will now have a tough decision who to support.’

Kompany spent a decade with City and captained them to four Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

However, the 36-year-old Belgian doesn’t expect any favours from his former club beyond a warm welcome.

‘I know behind the hugs and high fives, Manchester City is a machine that wants to win,’ he stressed.

‘It is a place that is so important in my life, I still kick every ball when I watch them. But I represent Burnley now and knew one day I’d go back there in the dug-out.’

Burnley had 31 shots on goal against League One Fleetwood but left it late to reach the last eight for the first time since 2003 – Welshman Roberts getting a flick to Vitinho’s shot on St David’s Day.

The underdogs were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half-time when Cian Hayes was dismissed for a high boot on Josh Cullen but goalkeeper Jay Lynch made a string of saves and Harrison Holgate cleared off the line from Charlie Taylor.

Fleetwood boss Scott Brown said: ‘I couldn’t be prouder of the players. Cian was over-keen in the challenge. He was devastated and apologised in the dressing-room.’
