Frank Lampard insisted Willy Caballero was not to blame for Leicester's second goal in the 2-2 draw after the Chelsea manager picked his stand-in keeper over £71million No 1 Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Caballero was given the nod for a rare league fixture after a string of Arrizabalaga errors but drew the spotlight at 1-1 when he chased a cross and was out of position as Ben Chilwell finished for 2-1.
Lampard backed his keeper over the situation and chose to blame his backline for failing to close down Chilwell.
Asked if Caballero was at fault, he said: 'Not in my opinion, no. As the ball travels on the cross, it is a miss hit cross and he follows that and he retreats to his goal when he realises he can't get it. The problem was that when we defend we sink to the six yard box and when Chilwell pops up someone has to be tighter.
‘I was right behind the Harvey Barnes goal it was typical the deflection it was instantly in so there wasn’t much he could do with either goal.'
Having retained Caballero from the FA Cup win over Hull, Lampard added: 'You make decisions every week and every day. No decision is easy as such. With a keeper you probably do give it a bit more thought and more time, especially I suppose if someone seems to be the designated No 1.
'But that can't be the end of the story. We have to be competitive. Willy trains well and acts well and did well against Hull last week and I decided to stick with him.'

He's doing his best with the players at his disposal now. He'll surely do better with the support of the board, players and constructive criticism from fans.

Our defensive positioning is poor. For both goals Christensen looked a weak link and I'm not even trying to scapegoat him but from what I seen hes the worst of the 4 defenders we are using. Tomori and Rudiger would be great for teams that will counterattack a lot. But posituonally our defence was poor on both chances. I cant fault a keeper that has played 2 in like 30 games...

To you all criticizing Lampard whilst, suppose to be seeing him as your hero growing to be one of the best coaches out there Where other coaches turned down Chelsea and even Sarri ran away, he took responsibility and stood buoyantly to take the job. At the start of the season, Chelsea team was written off and said not to even make top 10 and top 6 would be over achievement for Chelsea regarding the team and lack of coach experience. Since week 4 Chelsea have stood in top 4 and remain till date. Were other teams behind Chelsea better, they should have pushed Chelsea out of that position for at least once but never once. Lampard is a hero. Celebrate him!!! Thank you Lamps

Lampard is very sentimental in his coaching he doesn't want to give chances to other players except England players only which is very bad

Anyone pointing fingers at Lampard is not a real Chelsea fan, I know every fan wants their team to win week in week out but with this team and a club in transition I'll back Lampard to build a better team to compete for trophies next season. The Board will buy players that the manager want in the summer I think thats the reason why there was no signing this January..... Up Blues
