Dominic Calvert-Lewin was Leeds United's hero as he scored a 96th-minute winner to secure a 1-0 victory over Brighton, denting their hopes of securing European football.
Brighton had the chance to leapfrog Bournemouth into sixth – which could earn a spot in the Champions League – but instead they will be looking over their shoulders on the final day.
Daniel James and Pascal Gross had exchanged blows in an entertaining first half, with both coming close to breaking the deadlock with powerful long-range strikes.
Danny Welbeck then saw a brilliant individual effort cleared off the line by Ethan Ampadu after the break, as Brighton attempted to seek out a winner.
Karl Darlow stood firm to deny Jack Hinshelwood late on, while Diego Gomez also failed to make the most of a good opportunity, and Brighton were left to rue their lack of composure.
Deep in stoppage time, Jan Paul van Hecke played an under-hit blind backpass, and Calvert-Lewin calmly rounded Bart Verbruggen, who had rushed out of his box, and slotted Leeds' first and only shot on target, into the back of an empty net to snatch all three points.
Data Debrief: Calvert-Lewin does the damage
With their Premier League status for next season secure, there was little pressure on Leeds ahead of kick-off, but that did not stop Daniel Farke's side from turning in a strong performance.
Following Sunday's win, the Whites are now unbeaten in their last eight league games (W4 D4) – their longest undefeated run in the competition since November 2001 (13).
Indeed, they owe a great deal of thanks to Calvert Lewin, who notched his 14th goal of the season. No English player has scored more goals in the Premier League than him (level with Morgan Gibbs-White and Ollie Watkins).
Leeds also became only the fourth team on record (from 2003-04) to win a Premier League game 1-0 with their only shot on target coming in the 90th minute (or later), after West Ham vs Liverpool in January 2008, Huddersfield Town vs Watford in April 2018, and West Brom vs Tottenham in May 2018.
Brighton, meanwhile, will feel they deserved more, having produced 2.76 expected goals (xG) to Leeds' 0.76.
