Brendan Rodgers tipped Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for an international future after confirming the Leicester midfielder was in talks over an improved contract.

MailOnline revealed on Wednesday that Dewsbury-Hall, a revelation for the Foxes this term, was discussing a new deal with the club and ahead of Thursday's Europa Conference League clash at Rennes, Rodgers backed the 23-year-old for England selection if he maintains current form.

‘He’s just broken into the Leicester team and he’s looking to establish himself as a Premier League player,’ said Rodgers, whose side are aiming to reach the quarter-finals after winning last week’s first leg 2-0.

‘There is potential there down the line. He has the right attributes, but he needs experience.

'He has the qualities you would look for in an international player: technique, agility, tactical understanding. If he can show that consistently over the next few years, he will be on the radar.

‘I know he is very committed and wants to be here. Contract talks have opened with his people.’

The homegrown star did not make his first Premier League start until December 5 but has shown outstanding form since and is now one of the first names on Leicester’s team sheet, with Rodgers touting him as a future captain.

Dewsbury-Hall’s last contract was signed in 2020, shortly before he moved to Luton on loan, and expires in summer 2024.

At that stage, Dewsbury-Hall had made only two first-team appearances for the Foxes, so the new terms would reflect his enhanced status in the squad.

‘It would be great to stay at this club as long as possible,’ he said. ‘I’ve been here for half of my life and I’m sure there will be talks down the line.’

Meanwhile, Wesley Fofana makes his first appearance of the campaign after breaking a leg and damaging ankle ligaments in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal.

In the absence of Caglar Soyuncu, Fofana was included in the starting XI against the Ligue 1 club.

‘He will have a big contribution to make in the time ahead but we have to tread carefully,’ added Rodgers.
