Bernd Leno has welcomed German team-mate Timo Werner to the Premier League, admitting he would be 'happy for him' when the striker's move to Chelsea is completed.

The Arsenal goalkeeper, who himself made the move from the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen to the Premier League with Arsenal in 2018, is close with Werner from their time together at international level.

And with the Red Bull Leipzig striker close to completing his £53m move to the Blues, after a deal was agreed in principle last week, Leno has welcomed his compatriot to London.

'I get on very well with Timo. He is very welcome in London,' Leno told Sky Sport Germany.

'I would be happy for him, Chelsea is a great choice, no question about it.

'The Premier League is faster, more physical. But I think he's good for it. Timo is an extremely fast player.

'With his qualities and killer instinct, I'm afraid I have to say, he could be reinforcing Chelsea.'

Though the transfer has been pushed back due to a delay in Werner's medical, because of coronavirus travel restrictions, all parties are confident a deal will be agreed with a few details still to be ironed out.

Werner has a £53m release clause at his current club, and has scored 31 goals in 42 appearances for Julian Nagelsmann's side this season.

He was strongly linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, but Frank Lampard has seemingly won the race for one of Europe's most in-demand forwards.

The 24-year-old played 90 minutes on Friday night as Leipzig beat Hoffenheim 2-0 in the Bundesliga.
