Lille threatened Leny Yoro with a year on the sidelines if he didn't opt to sign for Manchester United, according to reports.
The French club have banked more than £50million after the teenage defender completed his switch to Old Trafford. His contract was winding down and the Ligue 1 outfit were desperate to cash in despite Yoro's desire to join Real Madrid.
Los Blancos were in the race with the Manchester side, but they were looking to hold off signing him this summer so they could land him as a free agent in 12 months. Lille became aware and were desperate to avoid that reality, which would've seen them lose a prized asset for nothing.
In an effort to motivate the player into changing his mind, Spanish outlet Marca claims Lille "threatened" to drop Yoro for an entire season if he turned down the move to the Premier League.
Real had shown their lack of desire to pay market value by offering around £30m to sign Yoro just weeks ago. Lille rejected that offer as they were determined to get top dollar for a player who last season featured in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year and has his best years ahead of him.
United have now snapped up the teenager, who becomes their second signing of the summer after Joshua Zirkzee. Defence was an issue for Erik ten Hag last term as his side shipped a concerning amount of goals en route to an all-time low Premier League finish.
Yoro will now add quality to their backline and seemed buoyed by his decision to move to Manchester despite originally favouring a switch to the Spanish capital.
He said: “Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honour. Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project, and showed a lot of care for me and my family.
“I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new team-mates. I cannot wait to get started.”
