Everton failed to make their experience count in the FA Cup third round, as Liverpool's Curtis Jones dealt the visitors more Anfield woe.
Match Report
Curtis Jones netted an outstanding first senior goal to carry a youthful Liverpool side to an impressive 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton in the third round of the FA Cup at Anfield.
Top of the Premier League and through to the last 16 of the Champions League, Liverpool appeared to be prioritising their other commitments until Jones came to the fore.
Jurgen Klopp included new signing Takumi Minamino among a clutch of established names at Anfield but largely put his faith in young stars, who held their own admirably against an experienced Everton outfit.
Adrian was required to make a string of saves in the first half, before the hosts took control of the second period and scored in stunning fashion through 18-year-old Jones with 19 minutes to play, extending Everton's wait for a win at their bitter rivals that stretches back to 1999.
Match Events
6' SAVE! Adrian parries Calvert-Lewin's shot
Walcott could hardly believe his luck as he races onto Sigurdsson's throughball and the flag stays down!
He sets up Calvert-Lewin for a volley, but Adrian denies him with his feet. A fantastic stop from the Liverpool number two.
8' Milner subbed off with ham injury
Milner - Mr Reliable - is down with an injury. He turned 34 just yesterday, but it looks as though his game is over today.
He can't continue and is replaced by Larouci for his debut. What a loss the 34-year-old will be if he's out for a length of time.
11' AGAIN! Adrian denies Everton's effort
Sigurdsson stands over the ball and delivers into Holgate - who's totally unmarked - but he heads straight at Adrian, who beats it away!
He can hardly believe how much space he's afforded there!
23' CLOSE! Williams's shot wide out
Calvert-Lewin clears an Elliott corner, but only as far as Williams at the edge of the box and he sets himself for a strike - it's dragged wide.
27' CLOSE! Adrian denies Richarlison's effort
Sidibe now, through to Walcott on the right and he crosses into a good position for Richarlison, but Adrian again prevents Everton taking the lead! Another excellent save with his feet to stop the first-time shot.
33' Minamino misses a great chance!
Minamino is very nearly in here with a great run in behind and it takes an outstretched Mina leg to deny him from latching on to the ball.
41' Pickford stops Origi with decent save
Origi is so close! What a pass this is from Elliott too to pick out Origi - the Belgian then turns his marker and tries a low shot into the bottom-left corner, but Pickford drops and gets a fingertip to it!
57' Yellow Card! Digne booked
First yellow card of the game goes to Digne - he's dragged Elliott back as he raced on to a Williams throughball.
71' GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Everton (Curtis Jones)
That's absolutely phenomenal! He opens his body, picks his spot and curls a sublime strike into the top-right corner, taking a touch off the bar on the way in as well.
That's gorgeous, simply gorgeous to make it 1-0 Liverpool. It's his first in senior football!
82' SAVE! Pickford parries Oxlade-Chamberlain long shot
Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn't make what Jones did minutes ago and Pickford takes the ball.

We were hoping for a Minamino good performance for Liverpool but it was Curtis Jones who scored a superb goal to send Liverpool to the next round, and not forgetting Adrian, who made a few saves in this match with a clean sheet, well done guys, keep it up. YNWA

One more evidence that Mourinho is past his prime. At the start of the Season he said, ManCity "B" team can challenge for Title. Reality:- Liverpool "B" team can challenge for Title.
