Second-half goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool a cathartic victory against Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.
Match Report
Mohamed Salah's incredible long-range rocket helped Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League with a crucial 2-0 win over Chelsea.
Manchester City's 3-1 win at Crystal Palace earlier on Saturday piled pressure on the Reds and they passed the test thanks to two second-half goals in almost as many minutes.
Star man Salah rose to an emotionally charged occasion with a thumping 25-yard effort that whistled into the top-left corner and doubled the home side's lead following Sadio Mane's headed opener.
The victory, Liverpool's first against Chelsea at Anfield in seven Premier League meetings, restored a two-point lead at the top for Jurgen Klopp's men and exorcised the demons of the infamous 2-0 loss in this fixture that shattered their 2013-14 title hopes.
Match Events
38' MISS! Mane's shot wide out
CLOSE! Loftus-Cheek is dispossessed in the opposition half. The boot is on the other foot as Liverpool hit their opponents on the counter. Salah squares it for Mane and he tries to whip it into the top corner with a first-time shot from 10 yards, missing the target by inches.
51' GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea (Mane)
Liverpool have started the second half with far more urgency to their game and they have been rewarded through Mane's close-range header! Henderson clips the ball towards the back post and Mane is not going to miss from a few yards out, giving the home fans the goal they craved.
53' GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea (Salah)
Two goals in two minutes for Liverpool!! This is an unbelievable strike from Salah, trapping the ball with a good first touch towards the right-hand flank, cutting into the middle and then arrowing it into the top corner of the net from 25 yards. Kepa barely had time to react!
59' SO CLOSE! Hazard's shot hits the post
Liverpool are swarming all over Chelsea now, looking good value for a third goal. The Reds came out for the second half fired up and they have surely sealed the win within eight minutes of the restart. Firmino's side-footed shot from outside the box dips wide of the target.
60' CHANCE AGAIN! Hazard's shot saved by Alisson
If Hazard hitting the post was not a wake-up call enough for Liverpool, this certainly will be. The forward's first-time shot from 10 yards is kept out by Alisson down low, but he should have been burying it after doing the hard work by finding some space.

I don't know what happened in the dressing room at the HT, what Klopp did, but that was one of the best performances from Liverpool this season. And I'm sorry City fans, but this season should belong to Liverpool. They are fighters. They put so much into the game. They don't have the money to compete with City but they still built a squad of great players. They deserve it.

This is the type of football Liverpool must play to win the league. Job well done, comfortable 2-goal win. I must say this has been looking like the toughest game on our schedule until the end of this season. If we stay focused and play well against Wolves, we should hopefully win all our remaining games. Why does sarri keep playing hazard as a false 9??? Hazard isn't as effective as a false 9 as he is as a winger!! Stop playing him in striking position😒😒😒 That goal by salah, wtf😍😍😍😨😨Goal of the week. Both teams played well but in the end Liverpool were the ones who made use of their chances. EPL title loading for Liverpool?....

1. Mohamed Salah's strike was his first goal from outside the box in the Premier League since January 2018 2. Sadio Mane has now scored 21 goals in all competitions for Liverpool in 2018-19; his most in a single season in English football. 3. #YNWA!!!!

Now there's no turning back for Liverpool. This is the biggest booster that they can get right now. They are passed the biggest test. Now Manchester City is having the biggest test. All are waiting for that glorious moment of Liverpool lifting the EPL title.

What a game by liverpool! Congratulations. Anyway,i just cant understand with sarri,i mean credit to him to actually put some trust on odoi and loftus cheek at least,he tried somethin that was unlikely for his own standard. But he never really understand that false 9 would never be the hazard’s best position. As i look into the team selection,i knew it straight away, without real striker, chelsea will suffer and hazard wont perform at its best. I believe sarri still played hazard as false 9 just because we won 2-0 with city before by playing him as a false 9. And one more thing, higuain,my word, this dude cant even run. Unless he get the service in the box, maybe he could produce somethin because to his credit, his finishin aint bad either. But like last night game, chelsea were lookin to create more space, and then came higuain?? God,on th counter attacks, even kante can sprint better than this dude though. I imagine if odoi stayed and we sub in giroud (maybe for ruben loftus cheek) maybe things would be a bit different because odoi is good in puttin in cross and giroud could use his physical to win headers and he is by far faster than higuian. And dayyum what a goal by salah though!! Anyway congrats on liverpool!

Liverpool always play beautiful football, today observation made from the game: 1. Salah rules 2. Mane owns the day 3. The engine was explosive--Kante 4. Hazard's had a bad day 5. Credits to the Unending support from the SCOUSERS(fans) 6. UNFAMOUS SLIP BY ROBERTSON 7. Henderson the true leader Don't bottle up 💦💦 [Bear]

And city aren’t fighters? 7 points down and now 2 points behind with a game in hand? That’s not fighting? Talking nonsense

Cant blame a whole fanbase and team for a select few individuals. Regardless it was a good goal but he was one of ours at one time so naturally the real fans have no hate for him and are happy he is doing well at a new team...

so you guys dont have money? that's ridiculous that you guys are fighting without money. your owner is from Somalia or sth that you dont have money?,
City has the ability to buy any player at almost any price. If there weren't rules that would prevent them, they could easily spend billions every season if they wanted. There is a big difference between between City and other clubs in terms of money. Tell me, does every team have the ability to spend over 100m just on bench players? No. Look at Liverpool, players like Milner, Wijnaldum, Robertson, TAA, Salah. Before Liverpool they weren't that much known, and now they are close to being champions of England. And because they truly deserve it. Liverpool over City and day, in terms of football culture, and true passion, with true fans.

I agree with you. But don't bring the topic of money here, Liverpool is not poor either. And yes, Liverpool deserve it this year, judging by their style. Klopp deserves a title.
