Liverpool: Andy Robertson sure 'fantastic' Darwin Nunez can be a difference maker

Andy Robertson has pleaded for patience with £85million summer signing Darwin Nunez but has been left with no doubt that the 'fantastic' striker can be a difference maker this season.

The Reds spent a club-record £85million on Nunez last month, but he failed to make a positive impact on Tuesday in a 4-0 friendly defeat to Manchester United.

The Uruguayan was singled out afterwards by fans on social media and his performance was summed up when he fired over from close range after Mohamed Salah's shot had come back off the post.

But Robertson is ignoring those criticising Nunez after one cameo and says that what he has seen in training is evidence enough that he is going to be a force in English football this season.

'He has obviously come in and we haven't been back for too long,' Robertson said on Thursday.

'We have to let him settle in, but he's looked good in training.

'The Brazilian boys and everyone that speaks his language have helped him a lot. I don't think me and him have had many conversations yet, but that will come.

'He's a fantastic player, we played against him and he made it really difficult for us, and if he puts in those performances he'll be a really good player for us.'

Liverpool took a famous quadruple bid to the wire last season, before narrowly missing out in the race for the Premier League, as well as in the Champions League final.

Robertson, an integral piece at left back for Jurgen Klopp, added that this group have the taste for trophies and are now hungry to taste it again.

He continued: 'We want the feeling of lifting trophies. We had it twice last season and two really good days out at Wembley and we want that feeling again.

'We know it takes a lot of hard work, we know it takes a lot of determination and everyone singing off the same hymn sheet effectively.

'If we do that, then we believe we are there or thereabouts because we've got a fantastic team when we're at our best.

'But we know as soon as we drop below that then we won't achieve what we want to achieve. That's what the plan is – to go for everything 100 per cent, like we've always done. If we do that, we believe that gives us the best possible chance to be successful.'
