Liverpool and Newcastle lead tributes to Kevin Keegan

Liverpool and Newcastle United are among plenty of clubs to have paid tribute to Kevin Keegan, who has died at the age of 75.

Keegan represented both Liverpool and Newcastle as a player, while also playing for Scunthorpe United, Hamburg and Southampton.

He won three league titles with the Reds, as well as one European Cup (Champions League), two UEFA Cups (Europa League) and the FA Cup.

Keegan is also the only English player to win the Ballon d'Or on multiple occasions, claiming the award in 1978 and 1979 while playing for Hamburg. He also won the Bundesliga title in 1978-79.

He went on to manage Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester City and England, having won 63 caps as a player.

Keegan guided Newcastle back to the Premier League in 1992-93, while he led them to second place in 1995-96 following a thrilling title race with Manchester United.

Newcastle released a statement on X which read: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history.

"Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters."

Liverpool stated: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan and mourn his loss.

"His indomitable spirit and remarkable contribution will be forever etched in our history and his legacy will live on."

Keegan was the Newcastle manager when all-time leading Premier League scorer Alan Shearer joined the club for £15m in 1996.

Shearer wrote on his Instagram account: "My Hero. My manager. My friend. Sleep easy boss."

As England manager, Keegan led the Three Lions to Euro 2000; they were knocked out in the group stage despite recording a 1-0 win over Germany.

Current England boss Thomas Tuchel paid tribute to Keegan, who he labelled a "superstar".

Through England's official media channels, Tuchel said: "I am so sad to hear about the passing of Kevin Keegan.

"As a young football fan, he was the first England superstar I can remember watching growing up.

"He won every honour possible and to be named the best player in the world two times was an unbelievable achievement.

"You only need to think how fondly he is remembered by supporters at his clubs to see what a man he was. Of course, he also had that special experience of playing, captaining and managing his country."

England have confirmed they will honour Keegan when they host world champions Spain at Wembley Stadium in September.
