Mohamed Salah is set to leave Liverpool this summer unless he signs a new contract with the Premier League giants, but Michael Owen spelled out a potential scenario for the Egyptian to remain a Red.
Michael Owen believes Liverpool must set a precedent in their contract policy to keep Mohamed Salah from leaving. The Egyptian is out of contract at the end of the season and is set to leave Merseyside after eight years unless a new deal can be agreed between the two parties.
Should he depart from the Premier League leaders, he would do so on the back of what has been perhaps the best season of his career, having scored 32 goals and tallied 22 assists in 43 games across all competitions.
Owen – who spent the first eight years of his career at Anfield – believes the 32-year-old wants to stay at the club, but Liverpool's hierarchy must make a special exception for Salah in their contract offer.
"Mo Salah's an interesting one. I think Mo Salah wants to stay, in fact I'm pretty sure he wants to stay," the ex-England striker told talkSPORT. "I think Liverpool are going to have to bend the rules slightly, they might say, 'oh right, only two years for players of this age'.
"But he's no normal player, he's as fit as a flea, he's dedicated, he lives in the gym, he's so professional. You can't tell me that he's not going to be at the same level in three, four years. I mean, he's just unbelievable. So I would bend the rules, I would give him the contract, the length of contract.
"I'm also not that type of person, a fan that says, 'just give him what he wants, he's brilliant, we'll win the league with him'. No, because you can't put your club at risk, but I don't think it's got to that stage.
"To replace him, it's going to cost an awful lot more, you're not going to pay a transfer fee for him. So I would do whatever it takes to keep him, and I think he wants to stay, but sources tell me that they're still quite a way apart."
In the scenario that Salah – who is believed to earn over £300k-a-week – ends his tenure at Anfield this summer, Owen pinpointed Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo as a potential replacement while urging his former side to attempt to swoon Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
"I think if he (Salah) was to go, Liverpool would look to replace him or find another attacking player, because I think Darwin Nunez will probably go as well," he said.
"There's lots of alternatives out there but no-one can replace Mo Salah. There's no-one out there that is going to get his numbers. There's been a few rumours lately about different players.
"Alexander Isak would just be an incredible move if Liverpool could get him, but I'm sure virtually every team wants him and Newcastle are desperate to keep hold of him, so that would be an interesting one.
"I like Antoine Semenyo at Bournemouth, who plays in the same position as Salah. I like him, a younger version, but definitely got energy, scoring capabilities and a good player."

Owen is absolutely right, grant him two years contract and he too should not be greedy about it. It is on record that Liverpool lost to PSG and New Castle due to tiredness and not that they have a better team after all we have played New Castle twice this season before that match.

Salah must leave his a lazy player. He doesn’t go for the ball when he loses it and he can’t dribble the ball past opponents i mean he has zero footwork let’s not duel those he does once in a blue

U can’t say there is no one good enough to replace him… he has grown old, we are not selling… there is a difference. Ryan Cherki, Kudus, Bakayoko, kan in Lee(PSG) just to name a few, we even have Takefusa kubo. The list is long. Now is the best time to replace him rather wait till he starts dropping down. I won’t want to see another Brendan Rodger’s season.
Now look at the numbers of all this players you mentioned, how many of them has more goals and assist that Diaz? The same Diaz we’re complaining about that he doesn’t score more goals. You loose Salah, Nunez, Jota, Diaz, TTA, VVD in one window because of greedy owners. How do you expect us to challenge for trophies? Remember players need time to jell into the team and philosophy of the manager. This isn’t Fifa my Gee. We can’t lose Salah, I repeat we can’t lose Salah oh hmmm. Salah is our only bragging right we have over City, MU, Chelsea, Arsenal. That’s why all their fans keep supporting he leave us, because they know the danger he brings to them. I won’t be fooled man.

Who do you buy? That’s the question, who? Not many wingers out there that’s better than Diaz, apart from Yamal, now you want Salah gone and who will replace him? Arsenal and City will just take over so easily. You see the way Arsenal lost their rhythm after loosing Saka? Please dont say that again. This greedy owners should give Salah what he wants. He still has like 3 season to play for us.

Mo Salah should leave on a high. His numbers are good but for now this team needs balance… we have seen against psg and Newcastle that dependence on him is risky. When he has a bad game it’s the same for the team we need balance just as psg got better after losing mbappe.

liverpool should offer that contract to a younger winger
Which wingers in the world of football that put Salah numbers? Goal and assists wise? We can’t buy Yamal of Barcelona and you know that. Nico Williams doesn’t put that type of numbers. No much winger out there that we can buy to replace Salah. Diaz is even better than many wingers out there and we’re complaining about his numbers, now you want Salah to leave? You don’t know what we have in Salah.
