Liverpool are said to be long-admirers of Mason Mount, but Jurgen Klopp has been urged to set his sights on a different Chelsea midfielder in the transfer market
Liverpool have been encouraged to sign Mateo Kovacic if Chelsea sanction the midfielder's exit. The 28-year-old faces an increasingly uncertain future at Stamford Bridge having recently entered the final year-and-a-half of his contract.
Kovacic has featured 19 times in the Premier League for the Blues this term, directly contributing towards two goals. Despite a sparse output in the final third, the Croatia international has performed excellently for the west London outfit and he's even captained the side several times.
In an interview with Lord Ping, Glen Johnson explained why Jurgen Klopp would 'love' the Croatian in his side. The former Chelsea defender said: "Mateo Kovacic is a top class player so the interest is no surprise.
"If he leaves Chelsea, he would suit Liverpool very well. He will be a pair of fresh legs in there and be very energetic. Jurgen Klopp will love the way he plays and would love to have him.
"The interest from many clubs proves that he is underrated at Chelsea. Core football fans will appreciate his performances over the ones who prefer goals and flair. He is a lot better on the ball than people give him credit for.
"He is a bit like Lucas Leiva when he played for Liverpool," Johnson added. "He didn't get the most credit, but the players loved him. I can only imagine Kovacic has the same fate."
"He’s a fantastic guy, I really like him. He is determined, has character, courage, and is prepared to take the ball in tight situations. What he’s achieved in his career with his national team and here at Chelsea, he is an important player for us."
