Liverpool 'planning a transfer swoop for RB Leipzig striker Werner this summer'

Liverpool are reportedly planning a transfer swoop for a RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner this summer.

Werner has scored 25 goals in 29 appearances for the Bundesliga title challengers this season, attracting the attention of clubs across Europe including Manchester United and Chelsea .

Also among those clubs are Liverpool, who will lose Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah for up to six weeks next season due to the Africa Cup of Nations taking place in January and February.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will therefore need striker cover, and is targeting Werner as well as a left-back to provide competition to Andy Robertson, according to The Athletic .

The 23-year-old Germany international is reported to have a release clause in his contract of 60million euros (£51m).

So he is viewed as a more economical option than other potential targets including Bayer Leverkusen's Kai Havertz and Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho, who could each cost more than £100m.

Werner last week admitted he "would think about it" were Liverpool to make a move.

He told Kicker : "When you score 20 goals as a 23-year-old in a season then, of course, there is interest. That's clear.

"But, right now, I am not thinking about what happens in the future.

"We are going into many important games. That's what I want to focus on now. I can still contemplate my future later."

But the forward admitted it would be difficult not to contemplate a new challenge with one of Europe's giants were they to make an approach.

He added: "What do you say if a club comes knocking in the next two weeks, a club which is one of the favourites to win the Champions League and makes an incredible offer? Most likely every player would think about it."
