Liverpool sound out Southampton over £50m signing of Romeo Lavia

Liverpool are the latest side to join the race for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, joining Arsenal in enquiring about the teenager.

Lavia joined Saints from Manchester City last summer and impressed in his first full Premier League season despite the club's relegation to the Championship.

The 19-year-old is now expected to leave the club and has been the subject of interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

However, Liverpool have now made their own enquiries to the south-coast club about a possible deal.

The Reds have asked on the conditions of a deal for Lavia, as the club took to refresh their midfield area, having already completed a deal for Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister.

Liverpool's interest is a blow to Mikel Arteta's men, who have been working on a deal for the Belgium youngster for the last two weeks - although no official bid has been put forward.

Lavia made 34 appearances across all competitions for Southampton last season, scoring his only goal in the 2-1 win over Chelsea - becoming the first player born in 2004 to score in the Premier League.

He also received his first call-up to the Belgium squad and made his debut for his country in the 3-2 win over Germany in March.

Liverpool are keen to add to their midfield options having seen Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all leave the club.

As well as signing Mac Allister, the club have also been linked with moves for  Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone and Gabri Veiga.
