Liverpool transfers: Summer target has price tag set as VVD hits back in row

Liverpool failed to return to the top of the Premier League after being held by Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds have hammered their arch rivals at home in recent seasons, but were unable to break their opponent's defence on Merseyside at the weekend. Their stalemate saw them lose ground at the top but there will be no knee jerk reaction, even with the January market open.

Jurgen Klopp was more than satisfied with his summer recruitment, which saw a huge midfield overhaul. The Reds and their new faces have begun to find their rhythm and any major purchases will likely happen in the summer, despite the club willing to spend big mid-season, as they have done previously.

Brazilian star has £30m price tag

The Reds were linked with Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade several months ago, but there recruitment drive in the summer means no mid-season move is likely. However beyond January though opportunities could open up.

Globo Esporte state that Fluminense have received no offers meeting the £30m asking price. The Brazilian club have therefore shown themselves willing to cash in for the right fee and South American stars often get snapped up by European outfits.

It is also reported that the Brazilian club could wait until the summer of 2024 to sell their 22-year-old asset, which would potentially maximise their profits given that's when the majority of suitors will do their business.

Juve push for Phillips

Juventus look to have made the first move in the race for Kalvin Phillips, who is looking to revive his career away from Manchester City. The former Leeds star has struggled for minutes since moving to the Etihad and Liverpool have tracked the player previously.

He sits behind Rodri in the City pecking order and a switch to Italy is now being discussed with Phillips desperate to get back to his best before this summer's Euros. Liverpool could move for a midfielder anchor at some point, but may miss out on Phillips.

Pep Guardiola recently said on the player's demise: "It's just because I visualise some things and visualise the team and things - and I struggle to see him."I'm not very pleased [with myself] and I am so sorry for him. I will not say that [to him] because it is a business and I have to be a professional."

Virgil responds to Keane

Virgil van Dijk has hit back at Roy Keane insisting he's "not arrogant" after he's assessment of Liverpool's draw with United.

Keane hit out at the Liverpool skipper after he claimed the Reds were the only side who tried to win Sunday’s goalless draw with at Anfield. The Irishman snapped back that van Dijk’s comments were disrespectful considering Liverpool have won just one title since 1990.

Van Dijk is not surprised by Keane’s response but maintained that everyone watching would have agreed with him. “I like Roy Keane, if he said that then it’s fine,” said the defender. “He’s Man United through and through and I understand he could react like that. But I felt what I said and there is absolutely no arrogance in that. Everyone who watched the game probably felt the same. We move on. We had the opportunity, but we couldn’t score and that’s the frustrating part.”
