Liverpool have been urged to make Memphis Depay one of their summer transfer targets - despite his Manchester United history.

Jurgen Klopp has one of the most fearsome forward lines in football, but needs back-up to Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.

And the Liverpool boss has been told to swoop for Lyon forward Depay, who starred in Holland's 4-0 win over Belarus on Thursday .

Depay scored two and set up the other two for the Netherlands - with his assists enabling current Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum to get on the scoresheet.

The three could all be team-mates next season, if Klopp listens to the advice of former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires.

Speaking to Bwin , the former Arsenal man said: “Depay wants to come back to the Premier League and he feels he has unfinished business in England.

“He perhaps feels he wasn’t given a chance to perform and earn the right to stay longer considering he was so young and showed glimpses of undoubted potential. Depay might want to return to Manchester United or he might be motivated to prove them wrong by performing for one of their rivals in the Premier League.”

Depay, who is rated at around £45m, signed for United in 2015 for a reported £25m in 2015 but left less than two years later, having scored only two goals for the Red Devils and started only one game in his second season at Old Trafford.

He has been much more prolific at Lyon, having scored 30 goals in 80 games for the French Ligue 1 side.
