Liverpool reportedly wanted to sign Denis Zakaria from Juventus instead of Arthur Melo.
According to Calciomercato, Jurgen Klopp's side asked Juventus about the possibility of signing Zakaria, but the Switzerland midfielder instead ended up signing for Chelsea on loan.
Having missed out on Zakaria, Liverpool subsequently moved to sign another Juventus player, Arthur Melo, who arrived on loan.
Liverpool were unable to agree a deal with either Zakaria or Juventus. Chelsea struck a deal to sign him on loan for £2.5m (€3m) with an option to buy for £24.1m (€28m) plus £4m (€5m) in bonuses.
As part of the deal to sign Arthur, Liverpool reportedly paid a loan fee of £3.87m (€4.5m), while they have an option to sign him permanently for £32.4m (€37.5m).
Arthur was an unused substitute in Everton's goalless draw against rivals Liverpool on Saturday.
The 26-year-old will hope to be involved in some capacity when Liverpool commence their Champions League campaign away to Napoli on Wednesday.
Arthur possesses plenty of experience having previously played for Barcelona and he could prove to be very useful for Klopp's team.
Liverpool are currently without midfielders Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain due to injury.

Zakaria would have been a better option for sure and cheaper I can see, and it also hurts to see Eriksen play for united knowing he was free and we didn't even look at him twice
